Field Trippin’

6 Mar

On Saturday, a bunch of Charlotte Yelpers had an Unofficial Yelp Event at Three Amigos.

Supposedly, Three Amigos is one of the best Mexican places in town but as of late it’s been getting some negative reviews which puzzled some Yelpers. I’ve never been to Three Amigos though. Why I haven’t is still a mystery to me, especially if they are one of the best places in Charlotte so I thought this would be the perfect time to go.

Can we say hola to cheap prices?

One of the girls had a check in offer for a free order of guacamole so we noshed on that along with the chips and salsa. The chips were fried to perfection and had a tangy seasoning on them. I could have had this alone and been a happy girl.

(source)

Yeah, it was good. It was very rich and creamy but didn’t had enough spice to it so it would have been better with more kick to it but it was still quite tasty.

I slept in on Saturday and didn’t have time to eat any breakfast so this was going to be my first meal of the day. I went all out and ordered the Chilaquiles Verdes with two fried eggs

Look at the platter of food that was sat down in front of me! And all of that was only $5.99-can you believe it??

I finished about half of the plate and took the rest to go but I still can’t believe how much food I got for such a cheap price! Everything was out of this world–the chips, the salsa, the eggs, rice, beans, you name it. Plus, they had Mexican Coke which is sooooo much better than regular Coke. Coke and this meal for under $9? Oh yes, I see another visit to Three Amigos in my near future.

I was definitely a happy girl after this meal full of great food and great conversation

But we didn’t stop there, the day soon turned into a field trip around Charlotte. Some of us ended up going to Sunflour Baking Company, a new bakery in Elizabeth that offers mostly organic (but some non organic) pastries and coffees using local ingredients.

(source)

They offer so much–breads, cupcakes, truffles, pies, pop tars, fig newtons and more!

I got an Americano to drink because, eek, I hadn’t had any coffee up until that point of the day! I love their Americano, it didn’t taste burnt like Starbucks Americano tends to taste.

I couldn’t go without trying one of their delectable pastries so one of the girls and I split the chocolate cream pie

Oh hell yes. Because chocolate cream pie was exactly what I needed after a plate full of eggs, cheese and beans!

The chocolate creme was fantastic-very rich and light and the crust must have had a stick of butter in it and totally worth it. We weren’t too crazy for the whipped cream-it was kind of stale and didn’t taste like the real stuff. All in all, the trip was a win and I now know of a new place to check out when I want a smooth cup of coffee and get my free Wi Fi on.

(source)

After that we headed over to Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find, a local comic book shop. Never would I venture into this place but I was game to tag along. I’ve driven by this place many times and up until a year ago, thought it was a sub shop. Oops.

Did you all know there was a Betty White comic book? Neither did I.

After that, our day of fun ended but it was really fun to take a field trip around Charlotte to places I’ve never been to in my five years here. It made me start to think that I have a lot of places to check out before I move in July, I must make a list soon!

I made the mistake of going to the gym afterwards. I thought all my food had digested but the food baby was still sitting in my stomach which resulted in a pretty weak workout. I did 20 minutes on the elliptical, five minutes rowing and a few lateral pulldown sets.

I was full the rest of the day, I didn’t want to even drink anything for fear my stomach would pop so I took it easy for dinner and had Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Bisque.

The soup was pretty bland at first taste so I added some pepper and that didn’t help too much. It was edible but nothing to write home about. As much as I love sweet potatoes I don’t think I will buy this again, I prefer my sweet potatoes in solid form.

Afterwards I watched “Going The Distance”

(source)

Really cute movie but I’m a sucker for a romantic comedy!

Are there things in your town or city you’ve been wanting to check out but haven’t? If so, what are they?

I love your hat Tiffany! I like to wear hats too, they are a great accessory.

There’s a new restaurant in Indy opening tomorrow: Seasons 52. I can’t wait to check it out. And a new crepe and frozen yogurt place called Le Paix. I love me some warm crepes, delish. My friends told me about a frozen yogurt place called Orange Leaf that I really want to check out too. They said it was very cool on the inside and had 4x as many topping choices and yogurt flavors than the place we go to a few miles from home.

I think I would have ordered one of everything from that bakery, love pastries!

Your comment on my blog today cracks me up 🙂

Seasons 52 is supposed to be fantastic! Please go and let us know how you like it (Charlotte doesnt have one but we have on in my parents city in FL) You are giving me more ideas of places I need to visit when I’m in Indy so thanks 🙂

The photos in this post are awesome- I love the one of you in your hat and the one of everyone walking across the street.

I used to get chilaquiles as a special breakfast in Mexico- it is the perfect hangover food as far as I’m concerned.

I have so much to check out in San Francisco- I have not gone to one single fine dining restaurant and we have a ton. I seem to find amazing food as it is without spending a week’s salary. I also want to go see the seals- haven’t been there in a long time!

    • simplyshaka March 6, 2011 at 10:11 pm #

Thanks! I would be broke if I lived in SF with all the dining they have there-such diversity too! I love the seals and always go to see them when I’m there (my sis lives about an hour north of SF) I will definitely try chilaquiles next time I’m hungover 🙂

It was so fabulous, I can’t wait to eat the leftovers!! You should come to Charlotte for a day trip and I’ll take you there 🙂 Nope don’t work for Yelp, I wish I did!! I just write reviews and stuff, it’s a great way to voice your opinion out about establishments in your city, you should check it out!

  7. Lisa @ Fit in the Midwest March 6, 2011 at 10:43 pm #

That picture of you is so cute! You look so happy!

I hate when I go to the gym with a full tummy and don’t get a great workout.

We watched Going the Distance this weekend too! It was a cute movie, but I am a sucker for a romantic comedy just like you are.

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:24 pm #

      Thanks! I don’t know what’s worse–working out when you’re full or hungover?

  8. Amanda March 7, 2011 at 12:14 am #

Andy and I live in a suburb and there is nothing but chain restaurants. Bah! There are a ton of places in L.A. that we want to check out though.

I really want to start going to Yelp events. How fun!!!

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:24 pm #

I hate chains—booooo!!! Yelp events are so bomb, I don’t know what I would do without them!

  9. vixter2010 March 7, 2011 at 2:58 am #

Wow that bakery looks amazing, I love cupcakes! I want to see that film too 🙂

  10. Elin @andserenitytoo March 7, 2011 at 6:54 am #

That baking company looks so good! Puddles of drool are forming on my keyboard as we speak…
I’m currently working my way through the brunches of my town, but I have a lot of restaurants/cafés left on my list! 🙂

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:23 pm #

Brunches are awesome-you should put together a list or rate them best xxxxxx when you’ve hit them all!

  11. dianacheung March 7, 2011 at 7:25 am #

I can’t believe you had such a great yelp day! Are those your yelp friends? And mexican restaurants have such great deals! Anyways, I’ve been meaning to go to burgertex in atx where they have a KOREAN burger!

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:22 pm #

Korean Burger?? You must try it–I love burgers and think I could love Korean food, even though I’ve never had Korean food–why I haven’t?? No clue. And yep, those are fellow Yelpers.

  12. Angela (the diet book junkie) March 7, 2011 at 7:48 am #

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:21 pm #

Haha thanks. I am so jealous you live in the downtown area-I can only imagine what fun that must be!

  13. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg March 7, 2011 at 8:09 am #

Wow…this pretty much looks like the perfect day!

  14. thefitacademic March 7, 2011 at 9:44 am #

wow – everything looks amazing! Is it bad if all the things in my town that I’ve been wanting to try are food-related? haha! I LOVE trying new restaurants and there are about 10 on my list to try out sometime soon!

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:21 pm #

No, definitely not wrong because I’m the same way 🙂

  15. Kace March 7, 2011 at 10:42 am #

Yes; a bunch of food places featured on food network, travel channel, etc. Especially one called Franklin Fountain that has these insane ice cream sundaes. I think we’re gonna hit them up for my dad’s birthday though!

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:20 pm #

Is it wrong if I have a list of places in different cities I’ve vowed to hit up, if I’m ever in said city? I think I need to add Franklin Fountain to the list, I googled it and holy yum!

  16. Mindy@FindingSilverLinings March 7, 2011 at 10:49 am #

  17. Natalie @ Will Jog For Food March 7, 2011 at 11:34 am #

I want some chocolate cream pie now!

Chilaquiles are one of my favorite things! It’s so simple but so good…when we were in Mexico, I ate them every single day for breakfast.

    • simplyshaka March 7, 2011 at 10:19 pm #

I could definitely be down for eating those every day–I need to make them at home sometme.

  18. bigcitybabycarrots March 7, 2011 at 11:35 am #

I’m craving Mexican and those pictures aren’t helping! That food looks amazing, as are the prices. There are so many places where I live that I want to try out. I need to start a list.

  23. Erin @ A Girl & Her Mutt March 7, 2011 at 11:10 pm #

You are such a hat person! Too cute.

Oh and guac is totally one of my main food groups.

    • simplyshaka March 8, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Thanks 🙂 Guac should be a food group, um, hello? Healthy fats!

  24. According to Gus March 8, 2011 at 11:29 am #

YUM! I could seriously eat chips and salsa every day. That plate of food looked soooooo delicious. One of the things we’ll miss most about leaving SA is not having access to all the fab Tex-Mex!

  25. Katie H. March 8, 2011 at 4:47 pm #

I love your hat! It looks awesome on you.

That menu looks so awesome and inexpensive. Now I would really like some Mexican food! YUM!

    • simplyshaka March 8, 2011 at 10:05 pm #

Thanks girl! Is there ever a time I don’t want Mexican food? Um, no, I loves it!
