Frugal Friday-Saving in South Carolina

18 Feb

On Saturday, I made the huge trek to South Carolina. That 12 mile drive completely did me in but there was a good reason I traveled so far-cheap gas and lower sales tax. South Carolina has a 6% sales tax (counties are allowed to add 1% to that though). Sales tax in North Carolina is 5.75% however there is also a 2% local sales tax rate and my county has a 1/2% transportation tax so add those together and things tend to get expensive at 8.25% in my county. On the weekends if I have time, I like to drive down to South Carolina and load up on groceries and gas, not only is the sales tax cheaper but the gas is  around $.20/gallon cheaper as well.

I had a Groupon for Groucho’s Deli in Rock Hill and invited one of my friends to meet me there for lunch.

I felt like I was back in college since it seemed to be all Wingate University  kids, except I had no rubber stamp on my hand from the night before and wasn’t hungover.  I thought the situation would be like a typical deli but turns out it’s a sit down kind of place.

And they carry  Dr. Brown’s soda, I love that stuff!

Service was super quick and friendly, we were greeted right when we sat and had our sandwiches about 5 minutes after we ordered. I got the Brown Moose which was fantastic and you must try the Formula 45 sauce if you go–a nice combo of 1000 Island and French dressing. Funky? Yes. Tasty? Hell yes.

I was reaching for my friends sanitizer after the meal and while doing so, knocked her water over…..all down my leg. I was there, I saw it happen, felt the cold water hit my leg and  drench my jeans but I was so in shock I couldn’t stop it—I hate when that happens! So we had to get towels, ask for a mop and I had to ring out my jeans. Thank god they didn’t get wet around my girly bits, that would’ve been a tad embarrassing.

But the main reason I was in SC was to go to Big Lots. I love Big Lots like I love thrift stores and discovering new Big Lots makes me warm on the inside.

I hit the mother load at this Big Lots!

Almond milk

Kashi products

Ketchup chips?

I love chips and I adore ketchup but the idea of the two together sounds absolutely disgusting to me. I respectively had to pass on these.

Satay sauce

Pretzel crisps

Cacao berry Tea

I told Amy from The Scene from Me about this tea since we have been tweeting about chocolate tea. Two days later, she tweeted a picture of the same exact tea found at Whole Foods…..

……for $6.99 more!!? WTF?? Thank God I found that tea at Big Lots

Men who ask you what bra size you wear. No picture, sorry. I wish I was making this up but this is my life. I was making my over to the cash register and passing by the Valentine’s Day lingerie section–who knew Big Lots even had this? It was very classy as I’m sure you can imagine–I think the bras were $5 and panties for $2. I don’t think I would like if my man got me lingerie from Big Lots–at least go to Target or Wal-Mart! Anyways, this redneck man asked me what size bra I wear since I look like his wife “up there” Not too many atime am I left speechless but my jaw dropped and I was at a loss for words. I think I muttered “Umm, I don’t feel comfortable telling you that” then made a beeline for the cashier. Who asks random girls what bra size they are? We probably wouldn’t have been the same size anyways since I wear Very Sexy by VS so they perk my girls up a bit while his wife is left wearing Big Lots lingerie. I don’t know why stuff like this always happens to me but this is the norm in my life sad as it is.  These creeper men are out of control!

I went to CVS afterwards and stumbled upon a 75% off basket filled with Burt’s Bee’s goodies!

I was going to stock up on these since they were only $2.50 a piece but ended up getting one of each. I have way too many lip balms at home and tend to have at least three in my purse at any given time. I never know who I’m gonna be smooching so I have to make sure my lips are soft and ready to go!

What’s the farthest you will travel for a deal?

Do you shop at Big Lots?

Happy savings!! Speaking of savings, stay tuned for a giveaway in the next few days!

Bah ha ha ha You always have the best stories! Sometimes I wonder if I’m the weird one and everyone else out there is normal because there seems to be way more Big Lots guys than not!

Hey girl, thanks for the mention! What a difference in price for that tea.
I definitely will travel far or out of my way to find something I want, not because it’s cheaper there, but because I want it and that’s the only place I can find it! I should check out the Big Lots here for some deals.

My roommate was just recommending Groucho’s to me, I’ve never eaten there. And yes, I’m going to have to check out the dollar store after seeing all those sweet deals.

Your girlie bits. Nice. So much classier than saying Junk. I’ve shopped at Big Lots before but we don’t have one of those around here now.

I shop at Big Lots sometimes, but your post has encouraged me to go more often! Aside from great deals on snacks, I tend to find some good deals on dishes and cookware too. I’m a Kashi whore, so I should check our location this weekend to see if I can score some cheap eats!

  12. Lily's Health Pad February 18, 2011 at 12:40 pm #

    Ummm….that story is too funny!!

I shop at Big Lots all the time. There’s one up the street from my home in the ghetto. I stocked it UP on Kashi products in the fall. I’m STILL eating the granola bars I got for $2.

  13. christina February 18, 2011 at 1:05 pm #

holy steals! and you were in SC! haha yayyyy. that man is a creep, i bet his wife wasn’t even here.

  14. 40daykedge February 18, 2011 at 1:34 pm #

Your sales tax is no biggie compared to here in Chicago, we’re at 11%. When I can I try to plan trips to my parents house who live in a different county where it’s lower. I won’t do it if it’s super inconvenient.

Last week I had a choice between two different West Elm store to pick up some shelves, both equal distance from my house. I went with the cheaper tax location. I think the stuff adds up in the end.

What a creepo! I like big lots but haven’t shopped there on a while. Truthfully I do not even know where the closest one is from here. I like to venture to Madison Wisconsin for the good stuff. It is over an hour away but they have a trader joes and a whole foods which I love!

  16. Laury @TheFitnessDish February 18, 2011 at 3:52 pm #

OMG! I can NOT believe a man asked you what bra size you were wearing. Are you sure he was shopping for his wife and now just a perv. LOL. You have some experiences, huh???

    Happy Friday!!

  17. This Italian Family February 18, 2011 at 4:11 pm #

  20. erica@fashionmeetsfood February 19, 2011 at 8:22 am #

  22. Amanda February 19, 2011 at 1:26 pm #

LOL! I can’t believe it! 1. They sell bras at Big Lots? Who knew? 2. He asked your bra size? LOL!!!!! Seriously cracking up here. Things like that happen to me too. People are weirdo creeps.

I love Burt’s Bees. I always buy it when Target marks it down.

    • simplyshaka February 21, 2011 at 12:05 am #

Creepers love me what can I say? And if I try to look mean and not make eye contact that just encourages them even more, ugh.

  23. Autumn @ Good Eats Girl February 19, 2011 at 4:37 pm #

What a creepy dude you ran into! I mean, seriously, who asks someone that?!?!

You did, however, find some AWESOME deals! I should stop at CVS and see if mine has the same deal on Burt’s Bees…I love the stuff!

    • simplyshaka February 21, 2011 at 12:05 am #

Definitely do it! I went to another one and they had it but then a different didn’t so it can’t hurt to check.

  24. Angela (the diet book junkie) February 20, 2011 at 1:48 am #

sweet deals! i used to travel near and far to save a few bucks, then i realized what i wasn’t paying at the cash register i made up for in gas. (whoops.)

hope you’re having a nice weekend! try to stay away from the weirdos in the bra section. 🙂

  25. Whitney February 20, 2011 at 5:53 am #

I love Big Lots. It’s amazing the things you can find! Most of the BL in Pittsburgh are in shady shopping centers, but I don’t care. I go and reap the benefits!

    • simplyshaka February 21, 2011 at 12:03 am #

They seem to be in shady strip malls here as well but that just means I go during the day!

  26. divasrun February 20, 2011 at 11:41 am #

Nike OUtlet stores are not close to me but I will drive an hour to get to one.

I love Big Lots, too! They have great deals.

    • simplyshaka February 20, 2011 at 10:22 pm #

I love Nike and Adidas outlets! I haven’t been to one in quite some time and think I need to make a trip soon!

  27. Katie H. February 20, 2011 at 1:51 pm #

Holy effing creeper! I don’t even know how I would have reacted to that dude. YUCK!

That is such a steal on the burt’s bees lip shimmer. I love that stuff!

    • simplyshaka February 20, 2011 at 10:20 pm #

Yeah, I was like “Really??” I can see why you love the shimmers, I have been using them like razy and wish I would have bought more!

  28. Simply Life February 20, 2011 at 6:00 pm #

    I love a good deal!

  29. According to Gus February 21, 2011 at 10:21 am #

75% off Burt’s Bees?! I must immediately head to one of the 1,000 CVS stores in SA and see if they have the same deal!

  30. Stephanie @ The Cookie Battle February 22, 2011 at 10:52 am #

If you have to travel too far, it’s not really a deal unless you are buying mass quantities of stuff or a big ticket item. I do drive for deals though if I think it’s worth it.

Haha that’s so funny the guy asked for your bra size…if he wasn’t creepy I might have told him just because maybe he’s trying to buy his wife a present and has no clue what he’s doing!

  31. bakebooks February 22, 2011 at 5:13 pm #

    God you are popular!!!

LOVE the dog thing! 🙂 Made my day…

    as does that sandwich….yum…
