Frugal Friday!

8 Apr

Can I get a T to the GIF? This has been one of the longest weeks I’ve had in awhile and so happy it’s over! Along with my normal work drama, I think another contributing factor to the long week has been the gorgeous weather we’ve had in Charlotte this week. It’s been sunny with temperatures ranging from the 60s -80s outside which it makes it almost unbearable to be stuck inside of a gray cube.

Random savings all throughout the week for me though, starting on Saturday.  I went to Cafe Carolina for lunch.  I joined their e-club for the coupons alone since I heard they send you coupons for free breakfast and lunch items. I’ve never been to Café Carolina before but I used to live near their location and planned on using their coupons but never got around to it.  Good thing this coupon was good until April because I was in the mood for a free lunch! Well, almost free, you had to buy a drink to get the free sandwich but $1.81 for lunch isn’t too bad of a deal.

I  got the Carolina Turkey Breast and it was meh. I would’ve enjoyed a sandwich made at home more but I had hopes for their cracked wheat sunflower bread. The bread light and airy but would have been better toasted and the turkey quality reminded me of slimy, deli meat.

Oh well, I had high hopes for this place since everything on their menu looked wonderful. It reminded me of Panera…. A cold, unwelcoming Panera. There was a lot of natural light coming in but no comfy chairs, no music and just a mean feeling to the place so I most likely won’t go back unless I have a great coupon and am in that part of town again.

Tip: Don’t want to sign up for businesses emails lists because of them flooding your inbox? Create a folder specific for email deals and check it a few times a week to see if there are any coupons you can use!

I went to Bi-Lo shortly after lunch and found  a few good deals:

BOGO Earnest Eats bars two for $1.49

Jelly Belly Green Apple Pudding for $.59. Ok, so it sounds nasty but look at that atomic green color! It was too green not to pass up at only  $.59. It will either be really good or really bad. Not gonna lie when I say I’m a bit skeptical about trying it.

Wai Lana Yogi Chips-$.99. I’ve heard of this chips before but never knew you could find it stores. When I looked online, you can get them for $1.59 plus shipping and handling so I saved some money by buying at the store.

I got a coupon for a free container of Yoplait yogurt in the mail this week. I love coming home from work to find mail waiting for me, especially when it’s not a bill!

Tip: Like your favorite brands on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. Sometimes they offer coupons just for being a fan!

Dinner Thursday night was courtesy of a Groupon deal for Sauceman’s, a restaurant that opened a few months ago in South End.

I called in my order, drove over and within the 10 minute time frame, the food was ready. Now, that, is what I like to see!

I got the white pizza and a side salad and only had to shell out $3 more.

Tip: Check your Groupon/Living Social/Half Off Depot deals to see if it includes both dine in and take out. If it’s take out, order a big dish or item and you can get two or three meals out of it!

What deals did you find this week?
Do you buy Groupon, Living Social, Half Off Depot or other deals on the daily?
I need to stop myself from buying so many!  I keep a folder with me at all times with my deals that I buy so if I’m out and about, I can use them instead of having to stop off at home to print them out.

Frugal Friday-And we’re back!

1 Apr

After a (not so) Frugal Friday last week, the savings are back!

*When I stopped in Summersville, WV on Wednesday, the Bob Evans had a sweet 75% off sale on their Christmas goodies

literally, it was sweet

Four items for $3-nothing wrong with that!

Tip: You never know where you will find sales. Always be on the lookout!

*I Wrote So Delicious a few weeks ago to tell them how much I loved their coconut milk. I straight up asked if they had any coupons they could send me since I am a thrifty girl and my wish was granted….tons and tons of coupons for their products!

I got a half-gallon of their coconut milk for $1.99 after the coupon

Tip: If you like a product, write a letter to the company and let them know! Companies get so many negative letters they are happy to see positive words and will most likely send you coupons if you ask for them.

*I checked my mail the other day and it looked like a bunch of junk but turns out, it was coupon heaven for different places in the area like Smoothie King, Burger King, Einstein’s, McDonald’s and Bruegger’s

I also found this coupon from Chick-Fil-A in the mail and redeemed it for lunch on Thursday.

Instead of buying a side, I brought some Terra Chips to the office with me and had a free lunch! I also snagged some extra buffalo sauces from Chick-Fil-A.  I sometimes show some skin to the Chick-Fil-A guy in exchange for a good number of  fat-free honey mustard dressings but this time around, I kept my scarf and coat on! Hooray for not pimping myself out for condiments!

Tip: Looks can be deceiving! Always check your mail to see what deals could be hidden inside.

*I stopped at Big Lots while in Pittsburgh and found a ton of cheap finds! I could go to my Big Lots in Charlotte or South Carolina but you never know what another Big Lots is going to have and I didn’t mind toting everything back home.

Seriously had to stop myself from buying 10 bags of each

Tip: Don’t fear the Big Lots, love and embrace the Big Lots…..just be sure to check the expiration dates!

*When I checked my mail, I saw that my gas bill had come. I dread opening up the gas bill because it has been ridiculously expensive the past few months. I used to pay for energy only and didn’t have to worry about the gas bill so you can be sure the next place I look to live at will be energy only no separate bills for gas and energy.

I opened the bill while wincing away and saw this beautiful number:

Can I get a woot woot??!! March was a bit warmer but I live in an older house that just doesn’t want to warm up so I was stoked to see that I cut down on my bill by 55%

Tip: Turn down the heat! I started to turn the thermostat down to 63  when I left for work then turned it up to 66 or 67 degrees when I got home. I usually walk around in a t-shirt and yoga pants but would have on a long-sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, pants and socks to stay warm. Plus having a portable space heater like Lincoln doesn’t hurt either!

Some freebies I found this wk:

*Get a free pouch of Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice

*Click here for a free sample of  FiberChoice.

*Like Aveeno? Check out their site for a free shampoo and conditioner sample!

What do you do to keep your gas bill low ?

Anyone else show some skin for condiments or am I the only one?

Happy savings!

Frugal Friday-Random savings!

18 Mar

Happy Friday all! This week has been a hectic one and am sure happy to sit back and relax. Oops, hold on, I won’t be relaxing….at all. I have an out-of-town baby shower to go to tomorrow, have to go into work on Sunday morning since I am off three days next week and then an eye appointment on Sunday afternoon. I am hoping I get a few hours to kick back on Sunday but that’s up in the air right now. Enough boring, busy talk–let’s talk savings!

*Ulta coupon–$3,50 off of a $10 purchase

I went to Ulta for eyeliner and mascara and saw that there was a sale on Loreal products–Buy One, Get One 50%. I’m not a huge fan of the BOGO 50% off because I feel like I see it more often now as opposed to the BOGO free that I love so much but I will take any kind of discount. I got an eyeliner and a mascara and when I went to check out, the lady told me I could get $4 off from my Ulta Rewards points.

I got the $3.50 off then another $4 which resulted in a total of $6.23 for two items–not too shabby!

*Mani and Pedi for $25

Thanks to Groupon of course!

This Groupon was set to expire soon and I had to use it up and Wednesday night was the only time they could fit me in. Fine with me but I was kinda freaking out since I called in sick on Wednesday. If I ran into someone from work, my excuse was going to be they give killer hand and foot massages at the salon.

I heard about OPI Shattered on A Girl & Her Mutt and have been intrigued ever since. I mentioned it to the nail tech and she said that one of the girls brought in a bottle and that she would put it over my color. I got red and you know what?

My nails matched my purse. Why try to find shoes that match when your nails match?

*Target coupon book

I love Target so much but the fact they send me coupon books in the mail makes me love them even more. The great thing is that these are store coupons so I can use manufacturer coupons as well for extra savings!

*Free Spicy Chicken Biscuit at Chick-Fil-A

I got this text from Chick Fil A on Wednesday and was stoked. I am festive and planned on wearing green anyways so be festive plus get a free breakfast? Sign me up!

*CVS Extra Bucks

I love CVS Extra Bucks. If you don’t know, it works like this: You buy your item at the normal price then if they are offering Extra Bucks for purchasing it, you get that amount back on your receipt for your next visit. The offer I saw was for CVS brand night-time cream so I paid $15.99 for it and got $5 to use during another visit to CVS.

*Food Network Magazine

I got the subscription for free  with my Coke Rewards I’ve been collected. Often I forget that I have magazine subscriptions so when I get it in the mail, it’s a nice little surprise!

*Muse CD

I love Muse but recently realized I have most of their cd’s except for The Resistance. Being the frugal girl I am, I went onto my library’s website to see if they had it, requested and two days later it was ready for me. Our library lets you check out the cd’s for four weeks so you get a good bit of time. It’s a great way to find new music and get music for free!

What savings have you come across this week?

Do you check out books, cd’s or movies at your library?

Happy savings!

Frugal Friday–Deals, deals and more deals

25 Feb

Hey everyone–happy frickin Friday! Why does it seem like when I have a short week, it goes so much slower than a normal week? Maybe I am the only one like this? Who knows, it sucks so I’m stoked Friday is here! Thanks everyone for putting in your two cents on how you keep things organized–I got alot of good tips and ideas out of it!

Some of my deals from this past week….

*Chick Fil A yogurt parfait +Dasani water for free thanks to my snazzy Chick Fil A calendar

It was a good size but I was expecting more than just one fruit, like some blueberries as well

And I finally got a chance to check out their new ketchup packaging!

I had to snag some for the road

Also, be sure to check out Chick Fil A’s Fry Day next Friday March 4th!

*Free dog treats

Ok, so Lincoln barks his non existent balls off anytime someone is near my front door or knocks on it. And I guess this applies to when my mailman/woman visits each day. He or she puts dog treats on top of my mailbox for Lincoln since I guess they can hear him everyday. At first I had no clue what these were and naturally thought I had a stalker since I am so awesome but I finally took one, sniffed it and realized they were dog treats. How sweet is that?

*Double coupons at Harris Teeter

I found the following:

Silk Pure Almond Milk – $.50

Minute  Brown Rice-$.55

Yo Crunch Fruit Parfait-free!

These are yummy but so tiny they end up being only four spoonfuls

*Sabra Hummus-$2

Athenos Greek Yogurt-$.65 each

Two packs of chicken breasts $7.88

Old El Paso tortillas $1

*Free dinner from Earthfare

I signed up for Earthfare’s email club and got this free dinner coupon. You spend $10 and you get a bag of baby carrots, mashed potatoes and either whole chicken or veggie burgers for free!

I spent $12 on the following

Vegan nuggets

Carolina Slaw

Bigelow White Chocolate Kisses hot tea

Yogi Bar

then got all of this for free

The vegan nuggets were absolutely terrific–just like chicken taste and consistency wise-win!

This was a fantastic value and worked out to about four to five meals!

What deals have you found this week?

Frugal Friday-Saving in South Carolina

18 Feb

On Saturday, I made the huge trek to South Carolina. That 12 mile drive completely did me in but there was a good reason I traveled so far-cheap gas and lower sales tax. South Carolina has a 6% sales tax (counties are allowed to add 1% to that though). Sales tax in North Carolina is 5.75% however there is also a 2% local sales tax rate and my county has a 1/2% transportation tax so add those together and things tend to get expensive at 8.25% in my county. On the weekends if I have time, I like to drive down to South Carolina and load up on groceries and gas, not only is the sales tax cheaper but the gas is  around $.20/gallon cheaper as well.

I had a Groupon for Groucho’s Deli in Rock Hill and invited one of my friends to meet me there for lunch.

I felt like I was back in college since it seemed to be all Wingate University  kids, except I had no rubber stamp on my hand from the night before and wasn’t hungover.  I thought the situation would be like a typical deli but turns out it’s a sit down kind of place.

And they carry  Dr. Brown’s soda, I love that stuff!

Service was super quick and friendly, we were greeted right when we sat and had our sandwiches about 5 minutes after we ordered. I got the Brown Moose which was fantastic and you must try the Formula 45 sauce if you go–a nice combo of 1000 Island and French dressing. Funky? Yes. Tasty? Hell yes.

I was reaching for my friends sanitizer after the meal and while doing so, knocked her water over…..all down my leg. I was there, I saw it happen, felt the cold water hit my leg and  drench my jeans but I was so in shock I couldn’t stop it—I hate when that happens! So we had to get towels, ask for a mop and I had to ring out my jeans. Thank god they didn’t get wet around my girly bits, that would’ve been a tad embarrassing.

But the main reason I was in SC was to go to Big Lots. I love Big Lots like I love thrift stores and discovering new Big Lots makes me warm on the inside.

I hit the mother load at this Big Lots!

Almond milk

Kashi products

Ketchup chips?

I love chips and I adore ketchup but the idea of the two together sounds absolutely disgusting to me. I respectively had to pass on these.

Satay sauce

Pretzel crisps

Cacao berry Tea

I told Amy from The Scene from Me about this tea since we have been tweeting about chocolate tea. Two days later, she tweeted a picture of the same exact tea found at Whole Foods…..

……for $6.99 more!!? WTF?? Thank God I found that tea at Big Lots

Men who ask you what bra size you wear. No picture, sorry. I wish I was making this up but this is my life. I was making my over to the cash register and passing by the Valentine’s Day lingerie section–who knew Big Lots even had this? It was very classy as I’m sure you can imagine–I think the bras were $5 and panties for $2. I don’t think I would like if my man got me lingerie from Big Lots–at least go to Target or Wal-Mart! Anyways, this redneck man asked me what size bra I wear since I look like his wife “up there” Not too many atime am I left speechless but my jaw dropped and I was at a loss for words. I think I muttered “Umm, I don’t feel comfortable telling you that” then made a beeline for the cashier. Who asks random girls what bra size they are? We probably wouldn’t have been the same size anyways since I wear Very Sexy by VS so they perk my girls up a bit while his wife is left wearing Big Lots lingerie. I don’t know why stuff like this always happens to me but this is the norm in my life sad as it is.  These creeper men are out of control!

I went to CVS afterwards and stumbled upon a 75% off basket filled with Burt’s Bee’s goodies!

I was going to stock up on these since they were only $2.50 a piece but ended up getting one of each. I have way too many lip balms at home and tend to have at least three in my purse at any given time. I never know who I’m gonna be smooching so I have to make sure my lips are soft and ready to go!

What’s the farthest you will travel for a deal?

Do you shop at Big Lots?

Happy savings!! Speaking of savings, stay tuned for a giveaway in the next few days!

The little Frugal Friday that could

11 Feb

Not gonna lie, this edition of Frugal Friday almost didn’t make it. I tend to put together Frugal Friday posts ahead of time and the fact that I wasn’t feeling too hot this week didn’t help. I woke up this morning at 5A. Naturally, I woke up this early since I planned on going to work a little later than normal. I was going to write it then but wasn’t too coherent and the coffee was taking its sweet time kicking into my system.

So without further ado…..Frugal Friday!

1) Coffee to go

When I was at Panera on Sunday, I got my coffee for free thanks to My Panera rewards. So I got my fill and had about two cups while there and then took a coffee to go. It’s free and you can use it the next day for iced coffee at home!

Soon after that, I had to say goodbye to my Dunkin Donuts plastic cup since I had been using it for a week or two. I don’t know what it about their plastic cups but I love them. I wonder if I could buy in bulk from their wholesale distributor?

2) Free Bagels!

I signed up for Bruegger’s Bagels email list some time ago and got this email last week. Three bagels for free–no purchase, catch or anything? Sign me up. Even if I didn’t feel like having bagels in the days after that, I could always freeze them and that’s what I ended up doing. Click here to sign up–if you do, you’ll also get a free bagel and cream cheese just for signing up!

3) Taco Tuesdays!

Lately, Qdoba has been offering $1 tacos on Tuesdays. They are located in my building so it’s very convenient and not to mention- cheap for me. Plus one of the guys who works there is way cute in a wrong side of the tracks kind of way—I represent corporate America and he looks like a burnout so at first glance we wouldn’t be a likely match. He is my forbidden fruit. Why do I love burnouts and bad boys so much? I guess that is a different post for another time.

Back to the point, yeah, I like going to Qdoba. And I love Mexican food on the cheap so when I heard about $1 tacos I was there in a heartbeat.  I bring my lunch to work most of the time in an effort to save money but you really can’t beat $3.24 for three tacos. Just be sure not to get guacamole or a drink, that’s where they get you price wise!

4) Athenos Greek Yogurt

BOGO free Athenos greek yogurt coupons–woohoo! I can’t wait to use this!  I kinda want to scour my neighbor’s trash just to see if they got this coupon but threw it away.  I have lots of soap and a hot shower, I don’t mind dumpster diving for coupons. I’m sure you don’t read that alot from sorority girls. Always on a quest to be different, I am. And apparently, I like to talk backwards like the Yoda….even though I’ve never seen Star Wars somehow I know that.

5) Harris Teeter deals

I found some pretty sweet deals at Harris Teeter this week via their cart sales and advertised sales

Tomato soup for $.62/can

VITA TOPS!!! I feel like I’m the last blogger to these since I am always reading rave reviews about these things on the blogs. I’ve wanted to try them but thought you could only get them in select stores or online and i wasn’t wanting to try them enough to pay for shipping. These babies were BOGO so I got two boxes for $5.19–not too shabby. Reviews to come soon!

4 cans of Progresso soup for $4.58. I saw that they were BOGO plus I had a $1 off coupon so I stocked up. I like how none of the labels are the same. Whatever happened to just a selection of labels instead of label over load–what does “Now even better!” mean and how does “Traditional” soup fare against “Non traditional” soup? So many questions.

Perhaps, I shall call Progresso and I can be in a commercial……except in a smaller kitchen…..and not in a purple satin robe.

Kashi Island Vanilla cereal for $2.19. Ok, it is expired and can either be really good or really bad but I’m willing to try it.

Can we just talk about how Friday was the day of Lincoln? He was featured not once but TWICE in the blogosphere! Check out Katie’s post featuring me and Lincoln for her new Feature Friday series…..think #FF (Follow Friday) but blog-style! Then he was featured on Tina’s Blog Dogs series today! If you’re having a bad day, check out the Blog Dogs series, if it doesn’t bring a smile to your face something is majorly wrong with you…..unless you hate dogs and had a really traumatic experience. If that’s the case, don’t look!

Do you bring your lunch to work or eat out?

What were some fabulous deals you found this week?

Frugal Friday-last one in January!

28 Jan

Happy Friday all! Today is a Saturday for me since I’m not at work …..but not for a fun reason- I have a root canal this morning. I’ve never had one and completely petrified about the process but gotta do what I gotta do right?  They assured me that I won’t be able to feel anything and that better me the truth (or should I say tooth?) Regardless, I still have a good number of vitamin V on hand so I am ready for this procedure!

But enough tooth talk, let’s get onto some deals of the week!

*Citipass book

I love my Citipass book. So much that some nights I ponder cuddling it with it instead of Linx, which is just crazy talk!

I got mine through the local Kiwinas club that was selling them for $25 and after two or three uses, it pays for itself. It has BOGO deals all around the Charlotte area for restaurants, shops, spas, sports, coffee and more! Anytime I meet up with a friend for lunch or dinner, I always suggest going to somewhere from the book so that we can save some dough.

With my Citipass book, I got a couple of good deals this week-

*Great Harvest Bread

Their bread is so fresh, fluffy and tasty (not to mention preservative free with no artificial ingredients) I wonder why I don’t stop there more often. Then I remember that loaves are around $5 a pop which isn’t horrible but I don’t like to keep bread at home since I can go to town on a loaf when having a craving for bread. But every now and then I like to indulge.

I got a loaf of their honey whole wheat and their rosemary garlic bread. Both can be frozen however on their site they say not to refrigerate it, perfect for me since it will be less accessible to my bread loving hands!

*Donato’s

After the CrossFit class on Saturday, I came home and napped and couldn’t move. I had plans on making pizza but my body didn’t want to do anything that involved standing so I flipped to my trusted Citipass book and saw a coupon for Donato’s.

I noticed it didn’t say a specify a size of pizza so I ended up getting two individual pizzas for the price of one. Perfect since I wouldn’t have cold pizza in the fridge to grab and go in the morning (I love cold pizza for breakfast!)

*Morningstar Products

I love Morningstar however buy it rarely since I don’t want to spend too much money on something processed plus rely on that as my main source of veggie friendly food. But I got these two coupons at Harris Teeter a coupon of weeks ago and I held on to them so I could use when Morningstar goes on sale so I could get more bang for my buck.

I saw all Morningstar products on sale this week for $3.33 each and used these coupons so I got a box of their “sausage” and new Sesame “chicken” frozen meal for $2.33 each

Also while at Harris Teeter, I went through their clearance carts and saw Ziploc Vacuum Starter Kit for $.49.

I figured, why not try it out, it’s only $.49 and while I am trying to eat less meat I’m not giving it up completely so this can come in handy

*Qdoba voucher

I received this voucher last year when I bought my sister a gift card from Qdoba for Christmas. We have Qdoba downstairs in our building and feel like I go there all the time but a practically free lunch? I can get down with that!

I got their naked chicken burrito with all the fixins and it was terrific. Why have I been getting the tortilla all this time when I could have deliciousness in a bowl and less mess? Plus I love how they say “GO NAKED!” or “GET NAKED” when you order a naked item!

*McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal

I wrote to McDonald’s earlier last year regarding a really bad experience there and apparently, they are trying to win me back with sending me free coupons!

I don’t go to McDonald’s too often but I am willing to try their oatmeal for free, I don’t want to see those coupons go to waste . On a somewhat related note-did you know that McDonald’s makes their own apparel for their employees? I knew they did it for their shirts and hats but didn’t know they had an “Apparel Collection”. I wonder if there is a Mcdonald’s museum in Illinois that shows you the apparel through the years along with food trends, promotions, etc.

Seen at Value Village this weekend

I’m glad to see that Frugal Friday is getting such a good reception and want it to continue! That being said, if anyone wants to do a guest post for Frugal Friday–let me know! I love getting new tips on how to save whether it be on food, cutting down on bills, living expenses, bank accounts, etc. If you have genius ideas of you own, I would love for you to do a guest post–contact me at simplyshaka@gmail.com—let’s make this happen!

Frugal Friday

21 Jan

So unlike the past few weeks, this Frugal Friday has no theme. Just some of the cheap finds, deals and things I’ve run into this week!

1) Coke Rewards

I’ve been collecting Coke Rewards from Coke products for the past few years. With them, you can go online and get a variety of things like DVDs, magazine subscriptions, gift cards, etc. I’ve gotten at least five or six magazine subscriptions through this, one for my sister for Christmas and got  a Chili’s gift card for my parents with my points. I try not to drink as much caffeine as I used to but my friends and family give me theirs (like I am 12 years old again)

2) Shroomies

Instead of buying a bin of pre-sliced mushrooms for $3, I like to buy out of the mushroom basket in the produce section. Especially if I have a specific recipe in mind. As much as I love the shrooms, some times it’s difficult incorporating them into meals before they go bad.

3) I checked my mail this week  and found two interesting things:

Dunkin Donuts coupons out the ying yang!

Totally set for the rest of the month! And don’t worry, it didn’t come with one coupon missing, I cut it before I could even get a picture.

Then when looking through what I thought was junk mail, I saw this cheap offer

I like food. And I like wine. And what do you know, I like magazines so six issues for only $6? I may have to take part in this. I figure $1 for some form of entertainment isn’t bad at all plus I could stumble upon some new-to-me recipes!

4) Adios prepared breakfast sandwiches! During the work week, my breakfast usually consists of oats with fruit, greek yogurt with fruit or granola or an occasional sandwich from establishments near work.

This past week I have been bringing in egg whites with Trader Joe’s Whole Wheat english muffins to make an easy and quick meal to start my day off right!

5) Going to the library

I got  an email from my local library branch letting me know that I had some cd’s and books that I requested ready for pick up. So I booked it over there (pun intended) and saw these jewels.

Don’t laugh, I have a slight obsession with the 70’s. I have been in a Bee Gee/Barry Manilow loving mood lately and I think I ever sang an emotion filled rendition of “Mandy” to one of my co-workers yesterday. I am happy about the cd’s but I am most happy about the Brandon Flowers solo cd “Flamingo”. Although, it’s more of a bittersweet happy. Flowers is the lead singer of the Killers (AKA one of my top three favorite bands) and him putting out a solo cd doesn’t sit well in my stomach because in the past when this has happened with bands, has left the band splitting up so I definitely hope this isn’t the case.

Plus he’s a babe.

(source)

I’m a little ashamed to admit, but I picked up Skinny Italian at the library as well

And even more ashamed that I am diggin it so far! But what do you expect from someone who loves all things RH (except Atlanta and Orange County)

Many” Juicy Bites from Joe”, don’t worry none are dirty or anything. Besides, I’m a sucker for a guido so I am happy to see his face.

Throughout the books there are “Teresa’s Tips”, not sure if these are actually her tips or not but some of them are amusing.

Some of the RH make an appearance through the book. No Danielle though–I was secretly hoping for a table shaking and flipping picture though.

LOVE IT!

Since it’s a “skinny” cookbook, they offer the nutritional value of everything in the back of the book.

I may actually have to buy this book, I am really enjoying it so far plus I already have a quite a number of recipes dog earred already!

6) Text messages

Because I had today off, I had plans on sleeping in but I woke up around 730A to a text message. Who would be texting  me this early when friends know I have today off?

 The answer?

Chick Fil A!

I had plans on going uptown to hit up a Panera that just opened so I could get my free Wi-Fi on so I stopped at Chick Fil A along the way and apparently, I wasn’t the only one who received the text message.

7) My Panera rewards

The reason I was going uptown on my day off was to hit up Panera. I will stop by Panera but I don’t have cravings for it unless I have a coupon that is. Plus, I can sit there, clear my head, catch up on blogs, bills, etc. with no distractions from Lincoln or anything else so it’s relaxing for me. I checked My Panera rewards the other night and looks like I had a free espresso drink waiting for me.

I went with the caramel latte

And if you didn’t think I would chow down on my free Spicy Chicken Biscuit at Panera, you would be wrong.

Plus they have Tabasco packets!  I just ran out so a perfect opportunity for me to stock up!

The place is very pleasing on the eyes however the acoustics are out of whack. I’ve had to move three times now just to find a spot where I don’t have to listen to either the staff members gossiping or the way too loud classical music.

So, that’s what I got for today-hope your Friday is off to a great start!

Do you take advantage of free Wi-Fi when out?

Do you check books out from your library or buy them?

Happy savings!

Frugal Friday-reduce your grocery bill!

14 Jan

Happy Friday all! Another round of Frugal Friday is here-the focus for this week is you guessed it, reduce your grocery bill.

But before we get into that I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone’s kind words, comments, thoughts on my last post about culinary school. I am psyched to look into something new that actually excites me. Even if I don’t end up going, I haven’t felt passionate about something that could actually result in a career im a very long time so this is revitalizing me a bit!

This past week Harris Teeter had super double coupons up to $1.98. I only shop at Harris Teeter if I know a specific item I need is on sale. Besides that, their prices seem to be on the higher side compared to Bi-Lo, Super Wal-Mart and other discount grocery stores. I wanted to see how much I could save so I googled Harris Teeter Super Doubles and found this Southern Savers site noting the specials, what coupons are available for the specials, what you end up spending and stuff you can get for a free. A few items had printable coupons that you could print at home and resulted in a bunch of savings for me. I looked through this list to see if I had coupons for any items that would be of any interest of me. Here are some highlights of my trip:

Two boxes Special K Cereal $1.50/box

Wholly Guacamole-Free! Click here for a $1 off coupon

Quaker Oats-$.69

Mueller Thin Spaghetti- On sale $.99 each with a $1 off coupon so…..Free!

Colgate Toothpaste-$.75 each. Reach dental floss-Free! Click here for a Reach coupon

Muir Glen Organic Diced Tomatoes-$.29. Get a $1 off coupon here

Alexia Sweet Potato fries-$.89

Dannon Light & Fit Yogurt 6/$1.92. $1 off coupon here (plus lots of other coupons to print out)

Truvia packets -$.99. This will keep me from swiping Splenda packets from Starbucks for awhile.

Footlong Meatball Sub-Free! Harris Teeter has sub points so for every six-inch sub you buy, you get one point. When you get 15 points, you get any footlong sub for free. I usually get a hot sub like meatball or philly cheesesteak so I can eat one half right away then heat the other half up at a later time.

Not pictured—Nasoya cubed tofu for $2 and Angel Soft 12  pack for $4. Before taking all the sale prices and coupons into account, my bill was $64. And after?

That’s right–$19.38. Don’t mess with a coupon packing woman on a mission to save!

Plus I got some coupons after checking out for Morningstar products that I will be using next time they go on sale.

Tips:

*Look through your coupons and compare to what’s on sale that week to get the lowest price possible

*If you have a coupon and after the coupon price, it’s still more expensive, buy the generic brand . Some times coupons aren’t the best value just for a name brand.

*That being said, just because you have a coupon for something doesn’t mean you need to buy it. If it’s an item I will be using in the future I will buy it if it’s super cheap but if you want to buy it just for sake of using a coupon, totally not worth it.

*Look into prices at your local wholesale club. For me, it’s not a value since I live alone however if I find a friend who has one or who wants to split one, it’s a great deal!

*Like an item but never see coupons for it? Go online! I will google it to see if a specific product has any coupons out there or write the company telling me how much I love their stuff

*Keep your coupons organized. I have my coupons organized in alphabetic order and when I research to see what I need, I put in order by section of the grocery store.

*Sign up for our local supermarkets online savings club. Harris Teeter has E-VIC specials that are custom for you and you can only find out about the deal via email.

What are grocery store tactics to help you save money?

 Happy saving!

Frugal Friday-You Say It’s Your Birthday?

7 Jan

Birthdays-we all got them. I believe that on your birthday, whatever you say goes because it is your day. I usually end up celebrating my birthday for a full week or sometimes a month. I believe that employers should be obligated to give you the day off on your birthday but most of all, believe you’re entitled to some free goodies on your birthday:

*Sign up for  Applebee’s Email List and get a free treat on your birthday along with other specials offered to you throughout the year!

*Like having your food prepared right in front of you? Sign up for Benihana’s Chef’s Table and they will you a $30 voucher during your birthday month!

*Enjoy a free creation at Cold Stone Creamery on your birthday. The offer is valid for a week before or after your birthday so there is no rush to go there on your birthday. Although, who doesn’t want to rush over to Cold Stone?

*Like Starbucks? Buy a gift card, then sign up for their My Rewards program and get a free drink on your birthday. You start out at green status then go to the Gold level and get a snazzy gold card with your name printed on it. Plus for every 15 drinks you buy with your Starbucks card, you get a free drink. And not just a plain cup of joe—you can go all out and get a Venti Extra Shot Mocha or whatever you want. I go all out when I get my birthday drink or free drink!

Venti 3 pump Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte with an extra shot of espresso-fabulous birthday drink!

*Or if you prefer Caribou Coffee, sign up for a free account and they will send you a coupon for a free drink on your birthday!

*Get a free blizzard on your birthday at Dairy Queen!

*Panera Bread has their My Panera program which allows you to swipe your rewards card with each purchase plus they give you an initial free coffee or tea drink plus a sweet or pastry item for your birthday (like Cold Stone, you don’t have to use it on your birthday and it’s valid for two months after).

*Be a Hardrocker with Hard Rock Cafe and get a free dessert on your birthday!

*Get a flavor south of the border! Sign up for Qdoba’s email list and get a free burrito on your birthday.

*Sign up with Sephora and get a free gift on your birthday! Last year I got a Sephora lip gloss set and this year an eye makeup set with liner and mascara, you can’t beat a deal like that! Plus you can pick it up in the store or when you order online (when you order online, you also get three free samples)

Hope these links gave you some good ways to have your  burrito bbq ice cream coffee blizzard cake and eat it too!

What are some places you know of that I didn’t mention that give you free goodies on your birthday?
