I ride solo

28 Jun

Today started out well despite it being 100% humidity outside. Don’t hold me to that though, I don’t know if that is a fact but it sure as hell feels like it. Scratch that, it just feels like hell but with humidity. Living in Phoenix was bad enough since in the summertime it felt like you were stepping into an oven anytime you walked outside. But at least there you didn’t sweat it out like you do in Charlotte. I give up doing my hair in the summer months and have been skimping on the makeup as well. I figure what’s the point? I’m going to sweat it off and I’m looking to meet a man in the next four days (because with my luck right when I’m moving I will meet the love of my life) so why not let my natural beauty glow? Or why don’t I just glow? Another thing that was great about Arizona with it’s lack of humidity was how my hair looked. And yes, vanity reasons are valid reasons when choosing a place to live. I grew up in Florida most of my youth so the frizzy mess that was my hair was the only way I knew it could be…..until Arizona. No frizzy, hot, wild mess. My curls would hold and wouldn’t fall flat after five minutes of being outside. Sigh, those were the days.

Oh yeah, back to today.

I ran a bunch of errands and hit up DD for breakfast.

Still not diggin the new flatbread and still haven’t wrote a letter stating my opinion. Maybe one of these days I will get to it.

When I got home, I went to town on my kitchen. I cleaned the oven as well as I could but there is still some grit showing in it and on the burners. I cleaned it yesterday as well and thought I would try again but didn’t make much progress. I cleaned my fridge and bathroom as well. I picked up some Mr. Clean Magic Erase things at Target this morning and got some scuffs off the walls. I wish Mr. Clean were a babe, he is hot and he is a man of his word—the magic erase worked!

I had a Groupon for Luna’s Living Kitchen to burn through. I’ve only been there once before and that was for breakfast so I was interested to see if their lunch would be better.

Since the Groupon was for $10, I looked at their menu ahead of time and had the game plan of getting the hummus plate and a smoothie. They have an awesome, unique selection of raw, organic and locally grown food that you won’t find at many other establishments in Charlotte. I love that. What I don’t love is the pricetag it comes with. Some of their lunch items are $11 or $12 and that just doesn’t work for a girl on a budget. Thank you Groupon for making it happen.

I sat outside and the server asked if I had been there since they changed their menu. I don’t know when that was so I told her no and she mentioned they added some quinoa burgers to the menu. Hmmm, I like quinoa. I like burgers. And god knows a hummus plate probably wouldn’t hold me over until dinner. I ordered the Fire & Brimstone Quinoa Burger topped with chipotle hummus, salsa verde, veggies and hot sauce.

Not gonna lie, I didn’t want to bite into it because it was so beautiful. A+ for presentation. I love pretty foods and appreciate when restaurants take time to work on presentation but taste is definitely more important. The burger didn’t’;t hold too well together and the salsa verde didn’t appear or taste to be salsa verde at all, it was more guacamole like. Nothing wrong with that!

I ate every last bite of it and even though I am a frugal girl, I would go back here again for this burger alone. If you are in Charlotte or ever in Charlotte, I definitely suggest this place. And the patio is dog friendly as well!

I had to get back home soon after since Salvation Army was coming over to pick up the last of my things. I went from this

to this

It’s very depressing and the only piece of furniture in my house is my mattress. I tried to donate it but they won’t take used mattresses. I tried to plea with them that it hasn’t sewen a lot of action and is in great shape but no dice. I guess it’s against the law to sell used beds in North Carolina?

Once they were gone, I packed my packs and went to the Y. I really wasn’t in the mood to workout. My legs were still a little sore from yesterday and just felt blah and icky from the heat. I did 8 minutes on the elliptical then got restless. I found a recumbent bike with a working tv and what do you know, Sex and The City was just starting so that’s how I killed 30 minutes of cardio.

Knocking that out plus watching a great episode, the one where Carrie and Aidan meet, left me in a good mood.

I just love them together. I wish SATC could be on forever and ever! Which reminds me, I need to backup my computer!

I brought my bathing suit with me and went into the whirlpool. And that’s when the weird stuff happened. I was the only one in there but it felt so good to stretch out and soak, I was moaning and may have screamed out “dirty bitches”  a few times because I was in seventh heaven. Mind you, I don’t have a bathtub just a standup shower so now when I get into a tub or whirlpool, it feels crazy good. I wasn’t being dirty or anything but 31 years is starting to take a toll on my muscles and it felt wonderful to ease the pain away. I was totally that girl in the whirlpool.

I showered, changed and then plopped down with a diet coke and some crackers and enjoyed the free wifi the YMCA offers to members.

Seriously, check out this lounge area, it reminds me of a cruise ship All they need is Isaac in the corner to make some umbrella clad drinks! I miss you, Love Boat.

I stayed there for a couple of hours then I went to Just Fresh since I had a coupon for a free sandwich or salad.

I definitely wanted to use this up before I left since it’s free. The best part is I didn’t even have to purchase the sandwiches or salads to get this car—my old neighbor left it in my mailbox when she was moving out!

I ordered the Mozzabella Salad-mixed greens, fresh mozzarella cheese, roasted portabellas, red peppers, tomatoes, pecans and balsamic vinegar dressing. The salad hit the spot-my only complaint was that it was drenched in dressing. I would order on the side next time.

Since I’m officially a country song-I have no job, no dog and no furniture, I may as well spent the rest of the night at the YMCA hanging out and maybe working out again, yes?

Do you do things solo? As you can see I have no issue going to eat by myself, go to bars by myself and have traveled to Vegas by myself among other cities. Last night when I was complaining to my friend about how bored I was, she suggested going to a movie. I’ve never been to a movie by myself before and it just seems weird to go alone, even though you won’t be talking to anyone. Who knows.

PS-And thanks to everyone for dealing with my incessant I-miss-Lincoln ramblings, I haven’t been myself the past few days and it’s all because of his absence. I can’t wait to see him next month!

I’ve been to the movies by myself (couldn’t get Doug to go with me to the first SATC movie, heh) and it’s not bad at all. I’ve also been to a bazillion concerts by myself because I listen to a lot of less-popular bands that my friends have no interest in seeing. It’s never really bothered me that much.

I love going to concerts by myself, it gives me more opportunity to enjoy the music as opposed to talking to someone throughout it.

        Exactly!

I can’t believe they blocked me at the YMCA?! I’m so tame, hahaha

I have no shame in doing things by myself! I’ve been to the movies alot solo…gives me a chance to eat ALL the popcorn 🙂

I totally envy you, for ridin’ solo. I really wish that I could do all the things you said, especially the vegas thing! That sounds awesome. But my biggest problem is that I cannot stand weirdos talking to me, and if they try to start with me, I will fight them. Maybe it’s my little man disease, but I will fight you, if you act weird on me!..
I need to maybe try to get some inner peace going on, so that I could do more solo things.
That burger looks so freaking good! I want it now!

    Quinoa burger?!? Yum!!

Gah, moving out of a place is so depressing…I am NOT looking forward to the day our house looks like that, even though I’m excited to move.

    • simplyshaka June 29, 2011 at 9:23 am #

Me too I’m so excited but I feel like its one thing after another with packing cleaning etc. How do I have this much crap??

  5. Kace June 28, 2011 at 9:08 pm #

I’m the same way about the movies – I feel like I’d need someone there to talk to about it after. Even though I have zero problem watching movies home alone? Idk.

  6. Amy @ Second City Randomness June 28, 2011 at 9:23 pm #

I really dislike going to bars solo, but have no issues having a decent meal alone. Give me a good book or magazine and I’m quite content. 🙂

I like to shop solo, but i hate to go to new places solo. I’m super excited to see you next week. Riley is, too! Did you get rid of your carpet? I like it. Sucks about your car by the way.

    • simplyshaka June 28, 2011 at 11:01 pm #

Yeah, I definitely can’t do the shopping thing with others…unless it’s at sketchy thrift stores of course. And yes, got rid of carpet. I am sad, I loved that thing!! We are going to have lots of bonding time!

  8. Shannon June 29, 2011 at 12:57 am #

“I was moaning and may have yelled out ‘dirty bitches’ a few times” HAHAHAHAHA. Awesome, just awesome.

  9. Alex June 29, 2011 at 3:52 am #

Yes, I’ve gone to the movies by myself. The only weird part is when you have to buy the ticket…the rest is golden. …Except when you have to go to the bathroom during the movie and have no one to ask what happened.

As for your mattress…I gave mine away on Craigslist. Just be careful…the people that come to pick up free items are barely ‘people.’

    • simplyshaka June 29, 2011 at 9:24 am #

I put it on craigslist and no one wantef it. I would be interested to see what kind of “person” would want it.

I love having solo time because I rarely get a minute to myself. With that being said – my solo time is usually spent trying to relax, or fitting in a workout or something.

Isn’t it amazing how ads can make food look so good? I always think the DD egg white sandwich options look good, but not when I see the actual thing in your picture. Looks like something from McDs! That Luna place looks way more my style. Yum! And what a deal.

    • simplyshaka June 29, 2011 at 9:26 am #

I know, it should be illegal how they portray them. It tastes good but almost a 180 in appearance

  11. MelissaNibbles June 29, 2011 at 6:22 am #

You know I love riding solo. It’s nice not to have to force conversation with an awkward date (which I’ve had a lot of lately) and just enjoy yourself. Sorry the burger wasn’t that great. I love your rug!

    • simplyshaka June 29, 2011 at 9:26 am #

I miss my rug already especially since I got a great deal on it at Lowes last year, sigh.

  12. Autumn @ Good Eats Girl June 29, 2011 at 7:41 am #

That quinoa burger looks amazing! Wow!

I love having alone time….It doesn’t happen enough for me!

  13. diana@mymarblerye June 29, 2011 at 8:18 am #

GREAT MINDS do think alike!! hahahah!! Anyways damn that Y is nice. no wonder it’s so expensive here. and yes I want a quinoa burger too!!! BTW loving the lack of humidity here!! I’m never sticky…..well..almost never…GROSS ALERT!

    • simplyshaka June 29, 2011 at 9:27 am #

Another reason I need to go to Colorado….

  14. Miriam June 29, 2011 at 8:24 am #

Sorry you’re missing Lincoln – I feel for you 😦 However, looks like you’re keeping busy, which is absolutely a good thing!

I do just about everything solo these days but for some reason, I’ve never been to a movie! Used to head to bars alone – I’d just bring a book and make friends with the bartender so if anyone got weird s/he would have my back!

  15. Alyssa @ Life of bLyss June 29, 2011 at 11:17 am #

GUH, I want to try a quinoa burger! now that my quinoa obsession has hit unhealthy limits… I’ve gotta mix it up.

and darn, I’ve been wanting to try those DD flatbreads! what’s not so great about them?

  16. Vix @ LittleMissEverything June 29, 2011 at 11:38 am #

Aw your house looks lonely but yay you’re moving on up! I do most things solo but never been to a movie or for a full on meal by myself, I guess I mostly shop 🙂

  17. Caitlin @ The Caitie Experiment June 29, 2011 at 12:02 pm #

    Hi there!
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and commenting a few weeks ago! I was on vacation but just came back and was blog-stalking you — and then HAD to comment to say THANK GOD THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE OUT THERE!! I ALSO hate the new DD flatbreads and tweet at them on occasion to let them know I’m still pissed. 🙂
Anyway, I love your style and will definitely be back-reading because you’re hilarious!

    • simplyshaka June 30, 2011 at 9:16 pm #

Great-so now I know Im not crazy! I was all “Maybe I’m the only one who has noticed??” It sucks. I need to start tweeting to them about this situation.

  18. leashieloo June 29, 2011 at 3:25 pm #

I’ve only eaten alone. I don’t know, maybe I’m really needy but I like to have at least someone with me. However, I don’t like shopping with most people because I like to poke around, so I do that too. And moan about Lincoln all you want! That’s some tough business 😦

  19. Katie H June 29, 2011 at 4:28 pm #

You must miss Lincoln SO MUCH! I would be feeling so lost if I were you. Haha thanks for the reminder to back up my computer. That burger looks really pretty. A quinoa burger actually sounds like a great, delicious idea.

I love going to movies by myself. I’ve only done it a few times but I feel awesome when I do. Don’t ask me why but it’s really fun!

  20. Monique June 29, 2011 at 7:57 pm #

Ugh I get sad when I leave my dog for a day, no joke! That quinoa burger looks AMAZINGGGGGGG. I’ve traveled solo and done a lot by myself before(including a movie) but I’ve never been to a bar alone. You need to email/Tweet me about that one, I want to hear more haha!

And, you’re telling lies! I’ve been in humidity and even though I can’t stand it, I still sweat almost as much in Arizona, sans humidity. Maybe I’m just gross. I want to move back to California.

  21. Callie {Rawxy} June 30, 2011 at 12:14 am #

hahaha – I laughed out loud when I read this post (literally) and keep finding myself laughing out loud – the country song is too much!! And now that you mention, I believe I am probably a country song as well – Awesome.

I do quite a bit by myself – travel, eat, etc… But, I’ve yet to venture to a bar by myself (except hotel bars, I can get down at those). People often think I’m crazy for eating by myself, but I quite like it – I mean, I love me some talking, but sometimes, nothing is more peaceful than consuming a good meal in perfect silence.

  22. Mindy@FindingSilverLinings June 30, 2011 at 9:09 am #

    1. I used to eat a veggie flatbread almost every day! I love those things!!!

    2. I miss Rocco when I vacay too.

    3. Why did they stop filming SATC?! Waaaah!

  23. Kelly June 30, 2011 at 1:23 pm #

I like to shop by myself so that I’m not rushed. But I think I have yet to eat alone! I always want to invite people I see eating solo to my table!
