Road trip essentials

22 Mar

Hello all in less than 12 hours, I will be leaving for spring break 2011!

Not to be confused with spring break 2001 Negril Jamaica….the best spring break ever!

Dear skin: I’m really sorry for not using SPF in my younger days

But spring break this time around doesn’t consist of free shots, all you can drink from 8 to 11P or endless hours of tanning and frolicking in the Caribbean. Oh no, this is spring break Pittsburgh style!

(source)

Yes, spring break Pittsburgh style. Ok so maybe not your traditional spring break but I’m not a traditional girl nor am I a college girl anymore. Just taking a break from the norm to see some friends and check out a potential city.

Before I start with listing my road trip essentials just wanted to say thanks for everyone’s input on my Creative or Weird post. It’s interesting to see what people make and use (or don’t use out of their kitchen) and it seems like Mexican food was the overall winner of creative meals.

I agree, especially since I made one last creative, use-everything-up-that’s-going-to-go-bad item in my fridge, like this wonderful Mexican bowl!

With this, I’m going to have all the essentials with me!

*Coffee

Need I say more? I usually make a half pot at home and will down a cup while getting ready and take one for the road. If I’m feeling really saucy (which I usually am), I will stop for coffee a few hours later.

*Music–I got some cd’s from the library and will be ready to jam!

I was planning on having this side with me as well

It was my hands, I was ready to go. And then an incident happened at the GPS section of Best Buy. Combine said incident with a long wait with a dash of disappointment when the one employee in Best Buy was assisting people  with an ill fated trip to Target. At Target  some lady cut me in line when there were only two cashiers at 7P at the one Target in me area, I *may* have called her a “protein whore” since she cut me off with a cart full of canned protein shakes. But it was my stomach talking, as soon as I got some food in my tummy, all was right in the world. Sorry protein whore. Anyways, I forgot the cd at Target as well and refused to go back into Best Buy because the parking situation is horrible at the location I go to. I am planning on picking up the cd somewhere along my travels tomorrow though! Five years since they put out their last cd and I got that one on the first day. Fail of a fan I tell you.

*A companion-Lincoln is hitting the road with me and he is a great and calm travel mate.

Even though tonight he was looking a bit skeptical about our trip

*Food-I try to bring as many snacks as possible so I can reduce the amount of money I spend on road food. This usually consists of chips, fruit and Crystal Light to drink.  I’m going to be grabbing a free breakfast tomorrow thanks to Bruegger’s Bagels to start my day off on the right foot.

*A good nights sleep-This is difficult for me since I’m so jazzed up for my trip but I try to cut down my caffeine intake the day before so I won’t be all wired vacation eve.

*Comfy clothes-there’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable while driving so I usually drive in yoga pants and a hoodie my uniform in life) and change right before I get to my final destination.

*Breaking it up-I used to drive 18 hours straight from WV to FL but now? No way in hell, my back is not having any of that! I like to break up the trip by stopping every three or four hours to get out and stretch. I’m going to be meeting up with one of my friends from college lunch in Summersville, WV then a few hours later will be stopping in Morgantown, WV to see some of my sorority sisters. Pittsburgh is only an hour away from there so soon enough, we will have made our final destination!

There is so much to do when I’m there and so many people to see–I can’t wait! We have a lot of plans and one of them….well let’s just say it involves one word: midgets. It’s so on.

What are your road trip essentials?

What was your best spring break?

Are you going to that bar downtown with the dancing midget? We tried to see him the last time we were in Pittsburgh, but it was his night off 😦 I love Pittsburgh, but as a true Mountaineer “Eat…..”(You know the rest!)
Have a wonderful and safe trip!! 🙂

YES!!! Casey’s Draft House I think it is? I went online and found out Midget Night is Saturday and Monday so I hope he is there on Saturday.

I am the same way, I feel like my car is going to get vandalized with my flying WV on it!

  2. euniece@innerpeacehealthytreats&runningfeet March 22, 2011 at 10:55 pm #

ha i am completely the same way when i am hungry.. my mother refers to it as ‘hangry’!! and i hope you have a good time in pittsburgh! there are so many cool places to see!! if only the weather would be as nice as jamaica!

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 7:07 am #

If only, right?? The weather was horrible driving in last night so I drowned out my sorrows with sangria 🙂

So jealous you are on spring break. Mine isn’t until the end of April. I have never been to Pittsburgh and I don’t think I regularly talk to anyone who has, but I love new places and road trips. Speaking of which, road trip essentials: certainly coffee and water, my ipod, Clif Bars, and stopping at the creepiest middle of no where places I can find. Have fun!

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 7:06 am #

Wow you all have a late spring break! There were no creeperific stops unfortunately but when I drove from AZ to NC there were a countless number of them. I saw a list of best pit stops to make throughout the country and alot of them seemed to be in the middle of nowhere (i.e. South Dakota). I kinda want to make a trip to South Dakota now just to see these random spots!

Ooh sounds fun! I think you have done good essentials there – music and snacks and lots of rests is a good plan! Have an amazing trip, looking forward to hearing all about it 🙂

  5. Emma March 23, 2011 at 5:33 am #

Hope you have a good time! Sounds like your trip will be lots of fun – your dog is so cute also!! =)

I’m not sure why I haven’t been to your blog in forever — but… I’m back now!! All those CDs are amazing!! Since you listen to Regina Spektor… do you ever listen to Ingrid Michaelson?? I love her too 🙂

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 7:03 am #

Hey girl, long time! I need to catch up on your blog as well!! I havent heard any of Ingrid’s music but everyone tells me I would love her stuff, she is on my list!

  7. Kace March 23, 2011 at 9:34 am #

I focus on the music and food aspects. Music-wise, I’ve got about 1800 songs on the ipod, so I try and listen to ones I haven’t heard in a while (or just play them all).
Food it’s soft pretzels, rice krispie treats, princess fruit snacks, tastykakes….not a healthy item in the bag! Have so much fun.

    • Kace March 23, 2011 at 9:34 am #

PS if you move to Pitt and become a steelers/penguins fan, we’re done. haha

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 7:02 am #

Your snacks are definitely better than mine!

  8. Erin March 23, 2011 at 9:51 am #

Yay for Pittsburgh! My family lives there and I love visiting. 🙂 Mr. A-Z is one of my favorite albums of all time. Enjoy!

Road trips are so much fun!! So glad that Lincoln gets to travel with you…he looks like one heck of a navigator! 🙂

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 6:05 am #

He is a wonderful co-pilot! Ok, I lie, he falls right asleep once we start moving 🙂

  11. Amy @ Second City Randomness March 23, 2011 at 11:05 am #

Protein whore! Omg… I heart you.

I always pack some clif bars and break out the yoga pants. That’s how I roll. Whether it be plane, train, or automobile…

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 6:04 am #

Seriously, homegirl protein and I almost scrapped. Ugh. And now I realize I forgot my Clif bars when at Target….

  12. Katie H March 23, 2011 at 11:15 am #

bahahahah at the protein whore comment. Too funny. I look back at college photos and find myself apologizing to my skin too.

Lincoln looks so cute- he got a hair cut! My road trip essentials are def comfy clothes and snacks. I also need a book on tape of some sort- after making the nine hour trek to va beach so many times last year I got so bored with music!

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 6:03 am #

9 hrs one way? Good lord, you MUST love that man 🙂

I’ve never done the books on tape thing but I want to give it a try.

  13. Mindy@FindingSilverLinings March 23, 2011 at 11:18 am #

We have the same taste in music! Jason Mraz, Regina Spektor, & Muse! YAY! You should pick up some Adele, your ears will thank you 🙂 Have fun!!!

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 6:02 am #

Thanks for the tip, I am forever looking for music suggestions!!

  14. genesis March 23, 2011 at 11:18 am #

jamaica looks fun! have fun on your spring break…

my road trip essentials are sleeping pills so i dont have to be awake for the entire thing…i hatre road trips…but if im driving i have to have good music.

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 6:01 am #

I love it. That’s why I need to find me a man friend so he can drive a good portion. I don’t mind driving but it gets a bit tedious after awhile and need a break.

  15. Monique March 23, 2011 at 11:35 am #

    Sounds like an amazing trip!

I think you have nailed all the essentials. Since i dont drive I usually like to bring my ipod and a book.. thoguh i cant read on the road (it makes me sick) i like to be prepared anyways. and comfy clothes are a must.

I cant wait till i get a license, i would so plan a day trip with Mickey and visit you and linky.

    Coffee. is. always. a must.

and i pack snacks but i have an addiction to spending money. i am always looking to throw money away on stuiff i dont need. like Food. Who needs it!

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 6:01 am #

No one needs food fool! 🙂 You and Mickey totally have to come visit us. You can sing Celine Dion’s “I drove all night” when driving since Mickey and Linky are going to be lova’s

  16. Laury @thefitnessdish March 23, 2011 at 12:06 pm #

Aghhh have so much fun!!! Love the throw back pics!

Best spring break was Cancun, I was 16!

  17. Alyssa March 23, 2011 at 2:48 pm #

MAN, that sounds fun. my best spring break had to be last year’s. all my best girlfriends and I took a cruise to celebrate our LAST college spring break! it was so fun. 🙂

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 5:58 am #

Thats awesome, the last spring break is the worst but still you gotta make the most out of it and it sounds like you did!

  18. Nicole, RD March 23, 2011 at 3:11 pm #

I got my magnet – thank you!! Love it!

I hope you’re having an amazing trip! It sounds perfect!

  19. bigcitybabycarrots March 23, 2011 at 3:52 pm #

Have a fun trip! Comfy clothes are a must for me, too when I’m traveling. I love any Mexican creative creations. I made my own last night!

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 5:57 am #

Thanks, I will have to check yours out!

  20. runninginpinkproject March 23, 2011 at 4:17 pm #

I just found your blog and Im really liking it! Just wanted to say hello! 🙂 I used to live in WV and cannot imagine driving to FL from there without breaking it up BTW. 🙂

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 5:56 am #

Thanks, I appreciate it! The drive was absolutely horrible but I was a girl on a mission. Non stop Mountain Dew, coffee and techno music blaring didnt hurt either 🙂

  21. leashieloo March 23, 2011 at 6:19 pm #

Let me know what you think of that Strokes CD, it’s quite possibly my least favorite. But then again, it’s difficult to top Is This It or Room on Fire.

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 5:56 am #

Well that is no bueno. I didn’t get it but plan on dropping by a Target or Best Buy today. I’ll let you know (Room on Fire is my fave b/c it has my favorite song of theirs-Reptilia)

  22. terri March 23, 2011 at 6:47 pm #

have fun girly! be safe as well. dont do anything too wild and crazy!!! xo

  23. Jess March 23, 2011 at 6:50 pm #

I just had one of my best spring breaks- a much needed trip to florida:)

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 5:55 am #

Thats fun–hope you got some sun and fun 🙂

  24. Amanda March 23, 2011 at 6:55 pm #

Have a blast on your trip!!!!

I always bring tons of snacks with me on road trips and good music. It helps a lot.

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 5:54 am #

Definitely, it makes such a difference in how I feel when I bring my own stuff vs. eating on the road. I was going to rely on Pandora on my phone for myself but couldnt even get service throughout WV so I’m happy I still had my cds with me.

  25. Natalie @ will jog for food March 23, 2011 at 8:15 pm #

2001 was my best spring break too! We went on a cruise, it ended up being so fun…got wasted every night, had a room right next to the bar, and got tons of sun. What spring break is all about 😉 (And no protein whores!)

  26. thefitacademic March 23, 2011 at 8:59 pm #

Woo hoo for a vacay – of ANY kind! I feel the same way about the non-traditional spring break getaway. I’m not much into the drink-till-you-puke (literally) types of spring break anymore. Don’t get me wrong though – Jamaica looks AMAZING and I’m sure it was CRAZY FUN at that time!

  27. lookingupwhileslimmingdown March 23, 2011 at 9:09 pm #

Glad you robbed my photo album for spring break photos..haha. That was the best spring break ever!!! Have a great time in the Burgh!!! (P.S. I just got your v-mail, call me when you’re driving home this weekend or when you have a free moment)

  28. Autumn @ Good Eats Girl March 23, 2011 at 9:20 pm #

Have a great trip!! My best spring break ever was in college when we headed for Cancun! SO MUCH FUN!

    • simplyshaka March 24, 2011 at 5:50 am #
