Something old, something new

29 Jan

The last few days haven’t been too exciting. It’s consisted of some old things

*Going to the gym

I love being back at the gym! I feel like each workout I’ve had has been a solid one involving both cardio and strength training not to mention a pretty sweet calorie burn

*Bowl of oats

I never have an idea of what I’m going to put in rolled oats when I started making them on the stovetop. When they are cooking, I go through the cupboards to see what can be added. I’m not much of a savory and sweet breakfast person but today I was. I had oats with walnuts, shredded coconut, maple syrup and flax-seed–absolutely delish!

*Sonic

I rarely go to Sonic anymore but used to go all the time when I lived in Phoenix. Their slushes are great not to mention their chicken wraps and their to die for tots.

And some new things

*Falafel Salad with baby spinach, carrots, cucumbers, tomato, kalamata olives and Laughing Cow wedge

*Root canal

I had my root canal on Friday. I can’t believe how quick and painless the procedure was!  They couldn’t have been friendlier and I had such a great experience. I told them how scared I was and they assured me that everything would be alright and it would be a quick. painless process. After hearing about root canals gone wrong and how horrible they are to go through (ok and possibly from watching Little Shop of Horrors too much as a kid and thinking dentists are out there to hurt me), I was a bit apprehensive. They numbed me up, let me know that if I felt any pain just to raise my hand and started to drill. And you know what? it wasn’t bad at all! Soon, they were finished and I was like “Huh, that’s it? Really, that’s it?” They explained the post-procedure care in depth and the surgeon even let me know about an Italian restaurant or two to try that were unknown to me. Working on my grill and talking restaurants? Hell yes!  When can I get my next root canal??

*Special K Chocolatey Delight

Hello, where has this been all my love? Or more like, why did it take me so long to try this? I’m not a cereal person whatsoever but bought this on sale a few weeks ago and cracked it open last night. I’ll admit it-I had two bowls in a row. It was wonderful.

*Do it yourself dog wash

I don’t have a bathtub so I can’t give Lincoln a bath in the tub like I used to. And sometimes, dare I say, Linky gets Stinky. I don’t know what he does but he stank this week so I researched a few do it yourself dog wash places and found Bark Street

They have a couple of bath tubs set up along with shampoos, conditioners, dog cologne, towels and dryer so it’s a one stop shop. Lincoln is a bit skiddish so I knew this would be an interesting experience. Um, Lincoln didn’t like his mama giving him a bath. He wouldn’t sit still and kept jumping up to the edge to give me kisses and was shaking like a little drowned rat.

Soon enough, we were home and he was happy sitting in the sun

*TASTYKAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, not necessarily new to me but it’s been forever since I’ve had one but I owe this beautiful reunion to Kace from Then Change It. She hosted a Tastykakes giveaway and since I need my ass to get bigger, I entered and was on a mission to win! Ok, I don’t need my ass to get bigger (trust me, it is not a white girl booty) but I can’t resist the power of Tastykakes!

Thanks again Kace for hosting the  giveaway and sending these my way!!

*Queen’s Feast Restaurant Week

I’ve never been to RW here but it’s a great deal—$30 for a starter, entrée and dessert. I went to George’s Brasserie and they had a varied menu list that would make an omnivore, pescatarian and vegetarian happy. The starters ranged from soup to mixed greens to shrimp and the main entrée menu had chicken, spinach and mushroom crepes, snapper and short ribs. The dessert menu offered rich desserts such as creme brulee, chocolate mousse and apple tart. Service was absolutely out of this world and I couldn’t have asked for more plus they have really cute servers, nothing like some eye candy while dining–hi boys!. Our server explained the wine list to me since I was intrigued by the whole “Interesting” section and how it compared to the merlots, cabernets, etc. He was on point with filling our bread basket along with refills and was prompt with taking our order.

The food let me down. It was good don’t get me wrong but nothing that made me want to foodgasm. I started with the Mixed Greens topped with fried Brie, candied pecans, fresh pears & pickled red onions with raspberry vinaigrette

Fried brie?? Any kind of fried cheese is welcome in my belly and the brie was bomb. I’m not a huge brie fan but fried brie and I could totally be best friends.

Next was the entree-Pan Seared Snapper with lobster & corn basmati topped with herb beurre blanc

The snapper was fresh and meaty but lacked flavor. The lobster under it was a nice touch and was good but it seemed a bit dry. The basmati rice both were laid on was just mush without flavor. Totally edible but no one flavor popped out at me.

The left dessert-Rustic Apple Tart  with Chantilly cream

You can’t really go wrong with apple tart. The cream on top was amazing and decadent…..not one bit of this was left behind!

What’s something new you’ve recently discovered?

Also, does anyone know how to fix an Open ID problem? I can comment on WordPress and self hosted sites but when I try to comment on Blogger sites it won’t let me—very frustrating! So if you don’t see me commenting, I am trying but the commenter gods won’t let me.

Awww… poor Lincoln! He’s so cute! I used to take my boys to Bath and Bones in the Atlanta area… it was great b/c it had a ramp up to the tub… my boys are kinda heavy so lifting them isn’t something I can do. I haven’t found anything like it since. Sure, I’ve seen other do it yourself doggie washes… but no ramp. Little-bit weighs 65lbs… so since I have to get my taste-tester to lift him anyway, I just bath him on the weekends in my own tub.

So glad the dentist went well! Yea! Now that you’ve read only a small portion of my past hospital/dental experiences… you can kinda see why I’m a bit apprehensive to find a dentist to fix my teeth. 😛

I used to eat at sonic all the time… funny, I don’t even drink coke anymore… but when I did I would order the vanilla coke, often. Like, sonic was down the street and I would buy a big vanilla coke and take it with me to work, daily. heh. I also loved the blue coconut slushy… ooooh and the cherry lime-aid. So good.

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:42 pm #

Cherry Limeaid is one of my favorites there but I never heard of the blue coconut slush?? I like the color blue and love coconut so maybe I should hold off since that could be a dangerous thing for me.

I can completely see why you don’t want to go to the dentist now, ugh.

Thats really cool that they had ramps like that, I’ve never seen that before either. I can’t imagine having a dog that big! Lincoln is so portable and easy to lift up with all 8 lbs of his body.

Your posts are always so jam-packed with goodness. How do you think up all this everyday? I think that’s something I fear as a journalist– not being able to come up with new material, and just being STUCK. You seem to have no problem!
And, recently discovered? Umm…nothing, really. Or, well, season 3 of the new 90210, which is really cutting into the midterm studying I should be doing =/

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:37 pm #

You can get your creativity from 90210 though—right? 🙂 I havent seen the new 90210 and kind of dont want to, I think it will ruin my original 90210 memories for me.

And thanks for the props. I don’t know how it comes to me, it just does! When I have an idea or a funny observation, I make note of it in my phone so I can go back and reference and talk about it. So much randomness in my life I tell you. We all get stuck there, trust me. If I get stuck, I don’t write as much b/c honestly it will just be boring “This is what I ate, this is what I did blah blah blah”

dude, you’re not a cereal person???? that’s like my vice, without it and i’m just not the same person.

p.s. really glad to hear your root canel went well! hope you’re enjoying your weekend!:)

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:35 pm #

Not at all….unless it’s Fruity Pebbles. I can totally be about Fruity Pebbles. I think most of it is I never buy milk so I never would eat cereal b/c I couldnt but I am starting to use milk in my coffee now instead of half n half so cereal here we go!

blogger always has issues with comments. Hence my love for wordpress. just try to reload it as much as you can then comment…if not then try again the next day. anyways, I loveeee restaurant week…too bad I have to drive an hour away to enjoy it. 😦 Either way…gimme a tasty cake!!! Those are better than little debbies x 100!!!!!

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:34 pm #

It does always seem that blogger has issues and wordpress never does huh??

So glad your dentist appointment went well! I am deathly afraid of the dentist and 99% of the time give myself a migraine before a simple cleaning. Pathetic!

I have watch envy…the one I have is great for what I originally needed it for – to do intervals – but I want one with GPS/heart rate monitor now.

Annnnd…I LOVE Tasty Cakes, but I don’t think I’ve seen them around here! I remember them from when I lived in the South – have you seen them somewhere…my butt is begging to get bigger 🙂

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:33 pm #

I am the same way. They had to prescribe me valium for a cleaning alone so I’m stoked I didn’t have to use it for the root canal. But I am getting a crown tomorrow so we’ll see how it goes :/

I got my watch on Amazon and it was around $100 but totally worth it. I originally got it for running but was bummed to see it didnt track miles so its perfect for comparing against the machines to see what my heart rate is and how many calories I’m burning.

One of the commenters said they dont have them in Indiana–you’re lucky. I will eat some for you!!

  6. Natalie January 30, 2011 at 8:08 am #

holy cow girl you have been busy!:) and i wouldn’t call that the same old at all… congrats on consistantly going to the gym… now if only I could get that motivation lol…

Lincoln looked too cute getting his bath! I can’t give minnie one or she soaks the entire bathroom… and sometimes I feel bad sending her to the groomers because I think she and the groomer weight the same thing lol…

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:30 pm #

You would definitely have to tip the groomer after grooming her 🙂 Do you just wash her in the yard? I tried that with Lincoln and he didn’t like the hose so much haha

Thanks 🙂 Getting to the gym is the hardest part for me so I’m happy I’m starting to find my groove again.

  7. TheSceneFromMe January 30, 2011 at 8:59 am #

That apple tart looks like a mound of hot fresh apple pie, yum! And that Chocolatey Delight is one of my favorite cereals. I mean those chunks of chocolate in it, so very good!
I recently discovered kale. I know, I’m behind the times. But I made kale chips Friday and they were wonderful!

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:28 pm #

Better late than never 🙂 I didn’t try them for a long time after reading about them in the blog world.

  8. christina January 30, 2011 at 9:35 am #

so jealous of all of this!!! i neeeeeed to have falafel soon. need! we used to get tastycakes everytime we’d drive from mass to sc (before we moved) and it was so exciting.

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:26 pm #

I wish we had falafel carts in the south!!! I will get excited every time I have a TK now, just for you….

  9. Amy @ Second City Randomness January 30, 2011 at 10:33 am #

Sonic. Ugh. My friend had texted me a pic of his Jack in the Box feast at 6 AM on Saturday morning. I woke up, saw that, and had actually put my shoes on to go pick up Sonic. Then said “wait Amy, let’s save some cash” and made the pancakes instead. Sort of worth it, but sort of kicking myself for it. Their bacon cheeseburgers are soooo good.

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:24 pm #

I hate when that happens, you know you want it but you can make something at home for free. But then there’s that longing in you still wanting it. Now I want pancakes!!!

  10. April January 30, 2011 at 10:43 am #

My friend and I gorged on some Tasty Cakes after a show once 🙂 They dont’ have them in Indy 😦

Ahhh…little Lincoln looks so cute and silly!

I had that open id problem once. I just posted as anonymous if it lets you and printed my name at the end of my post. It’s better now??

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:22 pm #

I don’t see them alot here which is a good thing. I had to hide the boxes a the top of the cupboards so I can’t get too them too easily.

I’ve just been posting with my name and blog address and that seems to be working. Still a pain in the butt though!

  11. Autumn @ Good Eats Girl January 30, 2011 at 10:58 am #

    Tots are awesome!!

And I’ve never even seen a do it yourself dog washing place! That’s awesome! How convenient! My dog looks like a drowned rat when he gets a bath too!

  12. thefitacademic January 30, 2011 at 11:26 am #

Wow you packed so many tasty eats in here I don’t even know which one looks best! I love the pics of the precious pup during the bath & basking in the sunlight afterwords! Too cute! And, I cannot believe your root canal was totally painless! I’ve never had one, but I’ve heard so many horror stories! I wonder if technology is improving or if you just got lucky somehow??

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:21 pm #

He loves the sun so much and we get alot of natural light in my place which is perfect! I guess technology has advanced alot since I’ve heard so many bad stories about them as well. We’ll see how my crown goes tomorrow….

  13. Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) January 30, 2011 at 11:41 am #

I’ve been having the same problem commenting to blogger blogs using the open id thing. I have to comment using the name and website option.

Glad the root canal went well! I haven’t had one and have always been terrified of them!

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:18 pm #

I finally tried that today and it worked–thanks for the tip!

I am still in shock that it went to smoothly-who knew??

  14. Karla January 30, 2011 at 2:00 pm #

I had never seen TastyKakes until I got to the East Coast! I’ve still never had them, but I bet they’re delicious.

Also, Lincoln is adorable. The end.

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:15 pm #

      Lincoln misses your love 🙂

TastyKakes are so bomb. I had to hide them at the top of my cabinets so they aren’t so accessible to me.

  15. sophia January 30, 2011 at 6:43 pm #

This is why I hate blogspot…when they limit the commenting, you can’t comment. But I would suggest you set up a google account linking to your blog so that they know who you are. 🙂

Haha, you’re the first blogger I’ve seen who expresses positive remarks to Tastykakes. It’s refreshing!

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:15 pm #

Thanks, I like to keep it real. It may be fatty, sugar ridden and trans fat friendly but eff it-we’re all going to leave this place at some point right?

I will look into the google acct–thanks for the tip!

  16. Jenn L @ Peas and Crayons January 30, 2011 at 7:36 pm #

I didn’t know fried brie existed and I’m pretty much enamored by the concept! woah!

smoked paprika is superrrr smokey! It really does remind me of meat. I had it with fried calamari once and remembered loving it… but this time I was just super freaked out! lol

    • simplyshaka January 30, 2011 at 9:14 pm #

Me too, I need to learn how to replicate!

  17. This Italian Family January 31, 2011 at 1:57 pm #

Glad you had such a great root canal experience! I still can’t get over how painful it seems!

And I love me some Special K and Sonic! 🙂

    • simplyshaka January 31, 2011 at 8:14 pm #

that special K is forboden in my house… i will eat the box in a day!

    • simplyshaka January 31, 2011 at 8:14 pm #

I can see why-it’s so delish, I want more. I also bought a box of the strawberry one but fear it’s not going to be as good, meh.

  19. Ashleigh January 31, 2011 at 9:11 pm #

OMG Lincoln is just too damn cute!!

All of this food looks delicious, when I read your blog I realize how boring I am!

I love going to the gym! I feel like my HRM always makes me work a bit harder!

I always have issues commenting om blogger… so everyone should move to wordpress!

    • simplyshaka February 2, 2011 at 7:54 pm #

Everyone should move to team WP! The hrm has definitely been pushing me harder than I normally go, plus I never trust the machines and what they tell me I burned. And thanks for the props, your food isn’t boring!!
