Bears Beers Beat

23 Jan

Hello all! Hope everyone had a fabulous Sunday. Not gonna lie, when I woke up this morning and saw it was 16 degrees out, I really didn’t want to get out of bed. I took two Advil PM tablets last night and was feeling mellow. The last thing I wanted to do was bundle up and take Lincoln out. But since I love the little pup, I did and we had a nice walk even though it was desolate outside.

I took Lincoln back in and whipped up breakfast. The original plan was to make french toast but that seemed a little more labor intensive that I was looking for so I settled on eggs in a hole. I tried to make it using one egg for two pieces of bread but that didn’t fly so I walked over to the fridge to get another egg singing Cypress Hill’s “Ain’t Goin Out Like That” because I refused to fail on the first meal of the day.

Whatever happened to Cypress Hill by the way?

When I got to the fridge, I quickly grabbed an egg which slipped out of my hands so I attempted to clean it up since Lincoln was right by my side. Seriously, this dog smells food or has a premonition that I am making food and he is right there, very sneaky sneaky. So if anything drops, I have to make sure I clean it up or grab it before he gets to it.

The eggs in a hole turned out fantastic! And of course when I say “Eggs in a hole” I sing it to the tune of Nine Inch Nails “Head Like a Hole” I love music if you can’t tell and wish I had soundtrack music to my life. I think it would be so fun to have “Tiffany’s Theme” when I started to walk…..it would be “Stayin’ Alive” of course.

However, back to eggs in a hole.

I did some cleaning and feng shui in my kitchen this morning. I have a cramped kitchen as is but wanted to be able to open up the blinds to the back of my house so I could get some natural light in.

Much better, it’s no longer a bat cave! And why does Lincoln look like he’s plotting my demise?

Soon enough, it was time to go watch some football. Would it be the last Bears game of the season or not was the question on my mind

I had a Living Social deal for Growlers Pourhouse in NoDa.

I’ve never been to this place but $30 worth of food and drink? I am willing to check it out! Don’t worry, I went with a friend because I definitely don’t need to be eating and drinking $30 worth (not to say I couldn’t, I just shouldn’t)

And for those of you who saw how much crap I carry in my purse earlier this wk, you would be proud to see how little I took with me!

Only four things–my wallet, phone, makeup bag and camera. Look at me cutting back!

We got to Growlers right before the game started and it was pretty dead except for a few randoms at the bar and a big party smack dab in the middle of the place. Exposed brick wall with a small bar area and four to five booths, for some reason I thought it was going to be larger than it was (that’s what she said) but it was a pleasant atmosphere. We were automatically greeted by our server who asked if we’ve ever been there then continued to tell us about their beer, food, etc. I thought it was really interesting that they make their own sausage there–you don’t see that too often and I am intrigued by the process.

I started with a pint of the Victory Prima Pilsner, which was quite tasty. I wonder if one of these days I will ever acquire a taste for IPAs or stouts?

We got the dip platter to start out with. I could exist on a diet of dips alone since I love it all-queso, salsa, onion, bean dip. You name it, I’ll dip into it! They have a dip platter for $13 and you get to pick three dips off of their menu. Our selection

Pimento Cheese dip. It tasted good but it wasn’t the traditional creamy pimento cheese dip that I’m used to. Plus the tortilla chips didn’t hold too well when you scooped it up.

Real French Onion Dip. I am still wondering what makes it “real”, this was my favorite dip. I love the minced onions in it and the chips served with it were perfect.

Roasted Vegetable Salsa. This was second runner-up and packed a lot of different flavors. We asked the server what it included because we couldn’t tell what the distinct flavor was and she said it was probably the variety of peppers used in it (poblano, jalapeno, bell) and coriander. My mouth wasn’t on fire but I sure did enjoy the flavor.

The end of the first half was not looking good

Supposedly Cutler hurt his knee (although he seemed to walking around just fine on the sidelines, he seemed to be sulking more about losing than being hurt) But screw him because I’m a sucker for a man with a bald head.

(source)

Brian, when you need another baby mama, call me. Let’s make this happen.

After that, our bellys were full. I almost undid the button on my jeans  since all the dip and beer was bloating my up but I resisted and remained a lady.

You would think we would stop there right? Oh no, we had $30 to spend and my friend wasn’t drinking and while I do love a nice day drinking session, I never day drink on Sundays (one would think I was a bible thumper by that statement but not so much)

We had one more thing coming to us—Turkey Apple sausage to split

Alright, let’s talk sausage (that’s what she said-ZING-again!). So it’s homemade and it tasted that wise consistency wise. It had more water or whatever juice is in the sausage casing  (please don’t tell me what it is if you do know what said juice is) than I cared for. Plus when you took a bite into it, you couldn’t separate it with a simple bite, you had to gnaw at it and shake your head a bit. Very Neanderthal like. Thank god I wasn’t with a gentleman caller b/c it was not a pretty sight. Regardless, it was tasty just a little difficult to break up.

Purple Slaw (which of course, I was singing “Purple Slaw” to the tune of “Purple Rain”)

Mac N Cheese

If a restaurant offers a side of mac n cheese, I must try it. Check out this ooey gooey action shot.

We left around the end of the 3rd quarter since it wasn’t looking hopeful and decided to stop for some caffeine since was that weird time on Sunday afternoons. Too late to take a nap yet too early to retire for the evening. We stopped at Smelly Cat Coffee House, which is right neat Growlers. I love going there for the name alone!

I need this for my house!

Gah, I love independent coffee shops so much. They always have the cutest decor that never matches and that just makes me smile. Plus Smellycat has little pods that you can sit in, relax and enjoy some free Wi Fi! I just got a small coffee but next time I want to get the Sledge Hammer–espresso and Ghiardelli chocolate-bring it.

So that was my Sunday. Whoever said that Sundays were a day of relaxation can go suck it. And my Bears lost so I am a little bummed but oh well, time to root for the Steelers!

I am now questioning if Lincoln knows that a pillow is supposed to go under his head or body?

Are you watching football tonight or will you be happy when football is over?

WordPress users-do any of you know how to make a header with multiple pictures and not just one? If so, let a sister know!

I used to LOVE eggs in a hole when I was a kid!!! Ahh, you just brought back memories for me.

So sorry about the Bears, darling 😦

I am so over football at this point. My hubby makes it that way for me. I am ready for baseball season. My true love 🙂

  2. divasrun January 23, 2011 at 8:11 pm #

I kinda sorta watched the Bears v Packers, but now I’m watching SATC, the movie, even though I have it. Sick of football until the Superbowl!

  3. TheSceneFromMe January 23, 2011 at 8:33 pm #

Oh that pimento cheese dip looks fantastic!
Props to you for getting out of the house today. I did not. My pups are not home, they are at the grandparents, so I didn’t have to go out for anything (potty breaks, gym, grocery etc) but I did go out briefly to deliver chocolate chip cookie dough truffles to my neighbors!
I enjoy watching NFL football, just wish I was still watching the Colts 🙂
I made my multiple photo header on a picture website and then had to keep recreating it to be the size that wordpress wanted. I don’t think I could do it again though, WP is so complicated!

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:54 pm #

I never thought WP was complicated but now you make it sound like it is haha

If Lincoln wasn’t here, I would be a hermit some days. I hate on the wknds when there is nothing more I would love than just to stay in bed but he jumps on my chest to let me know he’s ready to go out!

My husband and I actually went to see Cypress Hill at Summerfest (a Milwaukee music festival) last summer. They were pretty good in concert.

Thanks for being such a good sport about the game! 😉

I need the same advice you do on the wordpress header. Right now, mine is just a picture of Devils Lake, which is a really awesome place to hike at. I have tried googling the header thing off and on for weeks and can’t find anything great. I think I have to try to make one in Adobe Photoshop. Let me know if you get a good tip!

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:53 pm #

There’s a few tips on here you should check out, I am definitely going to try spabettie’s suggestion!

  5. dianacheung January 23, 2011 at 9:02 pm #

i went to smelly cat while I was there!! i bought a coffee mug home! loved it!! unlike football..anyways, i paste photos onto ONE powerpoint slide but make sure the 3 photos are moved to the top of the slide then save that ONE slide as a jpeg then upload it. that’s how i do it! i’m not fancy!

  6. Margie January 23, 2011 at 9:12 pm #

Sorry about your team…:( I won’t be watching that much. But I will be keeping tabs on the AFC game and hoping that the Jets get stomped!

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:43 pm #

I think that that was the general consensus, everyone I know was rooting for the Steelers. Hope you had a nice Sunday!

  7. Kace January 23, 2011 at 9:33 pm #

Sorry the bears lost, but I was pulling for the pack for two reasons: 1) they beat the birds, and if you’re gonna lose at least lose to the best. 2) with culter’s “injury” (think they just pulled him cause he sucks), packers have the best chance to potentially beat the steelers. And I hate the goddamn steelers.

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:44 pm #

Touche. And I kinda agree about Cutler. He has not been my most favorite person the last few games.

  8. Autumn @ Good Eats Girl January 23, 2011 at 9:48 pm #

Sounds like a fun day with a friend (except for the Bears loss…and I agree, Cutler looked just fine walking around on the sidelines. Ugh.)!

We are watching the Steelers game here, too!

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:42 pm #

I know right? He is such a scammer.

  9. Amy @ Second City Randomness January 23, 2011 at 10:02 pm #

    Sigh…
… at least the food was good while you watched the game, right?

I’m not quite ready to talk about it. Ugh.

True story- the first time I ever made out in the back of a car was to a Cypress Hill cd. he he he

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:42 pm #

Yeah, let’s just not go there. I believe my first song was “Killing me Softly” by the Fugees

  10. Jenn L @ Peas and Crayons January 23, 2011 at 10:06 pm #

OMG I want to run into the kitchen and start scarfing SOMETHING now! the purple slaw and mac and cheese… and honestly EVERYTHING looks so amazing!

    Lucky girl =)

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:41 pm #

Thanks, I am lucky huh? 🙂 It was damn tasty and worth every bite!

  11. genesis January 23, 2011 at 10:12 pm #

lincoln is such a cutie. life is definitely interesting with him in it obviously.

sorry your bears lost. my jets lost and i am pissed.

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:40 pm #

It is to say the least!

Boooo for that then. The only reason I wanted them to win was so I could see some more Sanchez. Ay papi!

  12. bigcitybabycarrots January 23, 2011 at 10:16 pm #

Lincoln is so cute! Hadley has taken to attacking the couch and then falling asleep with his head in the cushions. Maybe it’s a dog thing.

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:39 pm #

That is so adorable…..as long as he doesn’t tear up the couch that is.

  13. Erin @ A Girl & Her Mutt January 24, 2011 at 12:21 am #

I watched today. I’m a Steelers fan so I was especially excited about the game tonight. Sorry about the Bears!

Oh, and toad in a hole…great breakfast. Nice call.

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:38 pm #

I love hearing all the different names people calls eggs in a hole! Hold on, so not a Patriots fan? I thought that was illegal up there?

  14. spabettie January 24, 2011 at 1:20 am #

seeing as for a little while longer (I’m currently going through a blog overhaul + move to self host) you and I have the same WP theme, I can tell you how I have done my header… it is a 4 photo header I made for FREE way back when … made it on picnic in the collage section. you can upload several photos at once, and choose a few different designs of a multiple photo collage.

    🙂 have fun! XXO

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:37 pm #

Awesome thanks for the tip!! So is picnic a section you download or actually on WordPress? I am contemplating self hosting but hear it’s such a pain in the behind!

      • spabettie January 25, 2011 at 2:19 am #

        no – picnic is it’s own thing –> http://www.picnik.com/app#/home/welcome

it’s a free photo editing website… go to the collage section 🙂

I’m in the middle of the self hosting move right now… a bunch of broken links and stressed shoulders. 😉 but it’ll be good AFTER ! I keep telling myself!

  15. Lily's Health Pad January 24, 2011 at 7:33 am #

I’ve been wondering the same thing about headers. Let me know if you get an answer. I think most people do them in photshop or paint.

Lincoln looks so cute in the picture where the sun is coming through the window. 🙂

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:35 pm #

Thanks 🙂 The general consensus is that he looks evil but he is still a cute, evil looking baby.

I think I am going to try to put one together in Picasa or Paint. everything else seems super complicated.

  16. thefitacademic January 24, 2011 at 10:13 am #

mmmmmmm – looks good!!!! I just joined Living Social! I jumped on the bandwagon when they did that $20 for $10 Amazon card! Too good a deal to pass up!

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:34 pm #

Doh, I forgot to buy that one the other day but how could you pass up a deal like that!? The best part of waking up is seeing my Groupon/Living Social email!

  17. Natalie January 24, 2011 at 11:21 am #

    too cute lincoln!!!

i made my header in paint and word somehow one day when i was bored… not sure of an easier way to do it…

I’ve yet to venture into the world of pimiento cheese, and considering I’ve been in the southlands for over four years now, I have no excuse.
Eggs in a hole, in my grandmother’s Irish vernacular, were called t*ts in a ditch. Not sure why 🙂
Sounds like we’re sharing weather, though I think my mountains are expecting 16 inches tomorrow. Hoping for a snow day!

    • simplyshaka January 24, 2011 at 7:30 pm #

I am sooooo using Tits in a ditch next time around—I LOVE it!

I never tried pimento cheese until last yr, it’s oddly delish. I couldn’t eat it all the time for an indulgence, it’s pretty damn tasty.

Good luck with your snow, I am doing a snow dance over here b/c I could use a day off!
