NYE Chow

1 Jan

Hello all, hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year’s Eve! Thankfully, I didn’t party too hard and only had three beers last night so I felt great this morning!  It was nice to have yesterday off, I can’t remember the last time I had NYE off since quarter end was always busy in my old department. Then throw that together with year-end, we would be there the entire day and sometimes even later.

I woke up, ran some errands and took a dreaded trip to Super Wal-Mart to pick up ingredients for the NYE appetizers I was making. I dread going to regular Wal-Mart so multiple that times 100 when I go to Super. I should just stop going there but they do really have the lowest prices around and each time I go, I secretly hope the clientele and experience is going to be a little better than before. No dice this past time. There were only four registers open…on NYE! That seems a little ridiculous to me and to make it worse, the people in front of me had three carts full of crap and they kept disputing every other price. Then when it was my turn to check out, my cashier just kept talking with another employee about how some mofo owed her money. Kill me.

I stopped at Laurel Market afterwards. Laurel Market is a small convenience store/deli near me yet I’ve never stopped in.

Word on the street is they have delicious breakfast and lunch sandwiches and salads. Always wanting to check out something different, I went and ordered a tomato and sprouts sandwich with mayo, black pepper on sourdough.

Random? Yes. Supposedly tomato and mayo sandwiches are a thing in the south yet I’ve never had one. I don’t know why either because I love tomatoes and bread plus throw in some mayo and it can’t be bad right? Right, it was yummy. One of my goals for 2011 is to cut down on my meat intake and was surprised to see how many veggie options they have at LM, I can’t wait to try more of their concoctions!

Plus they have Dr. Brown’s, which is just awesome.

I received something in the mail also, I love surprises!

Blogger Babes calendar that I won over at Meals & Moves! It’s a charity calendar that Deb from Smoothie Girl Eats Too made and it is a touching story of how it came to be. Totally psyched for this–thanks Janetha and Deb!!

The next item on my agenda was to start making appetizers for the night.

On the apps schedule:

*Asian Cole Slaw

*Pizza Rolls

*Creamy Crab and Red Pepper Spread

Asian Cole Slaw-my sister gave me the recipe years ago and it is my favorite thing to make when I go to a party. It takes minutes to make and there are only five ingedients, so it keeps things cheap.

Take 3/4 cup oil, 1 cup white vinegar, mix together. Then throw in 1/2 cup sugar or splenda and mix until dissolved. Then take the packet of beef ramen flavoring and mix in and let sit for an hour or longer.

Place the ramen noodles in a plastic bag and pound until broken up (I ended up using two packs of ramen noodles). Combine the cole slaw mix, dressing and ramen noodles together and done!

Creamy Crab and Red Pepper Spread– I found this recipe on Kraft.com and it sounded like yet another perfect thing to make. Plus I’ve never used canned crab meat before, so why not take a chance on something new?

I added celery to the mix plus chopped some up for the upcoming week so I would have an easy snack to grab

One red pepper alone cost $1.75 (which is absolutely ridiculous) but then saw a three pack of peppers for $3.25 so I bought that, added more red peppers then cut some up as well for an easy to grab snack for the wk.

Same with the green onions, I added more than called for since I love the flavor. Good thing my friend loves them as well since I added a ton but forgot to ask her before hand!

I am all about the convenience as you can see! Plus look at the pretty colors…..

Then just mixed with the drained crab meat, shredded cheese and cream cheese and done!

Pizza Rolls-I love me some pizza rolls. They are quick. cheesy and meaty goodness and easy to make in a pinch. I made these over at my friends house so they would be fresh out of the oven instead of having to reheat.

All together

A completely random NYE meal but tasty nonetheless. I used to a different kind of pizza dough this time around and didn’t put turkey pepperoni in the rolls. They didn’t turn out as well as they have in the past but they were still edible.

Plus paired up with some of these, it was a nice, relaxing night

Lincoln was in attendance as well, my friend told me we could crash there so I wouldn’t have to worry about drinking and getting home.

Spoiled, I tell you.  I never was a huge let’s go out on NYE person. I see it as amateur hour and refuse to spend money just to go into somewhere that’s cramped, have to wait a long time for drinks and have a horrible time. Plus there is the huge finding an outfit issue. No thank you, I would rather stay in with pups and friends and hang out…..in my pj pants, I have no shame. I used to love watching the ball drop but just not into it anymore. We spent the night eating and watching Weeds, so it was a nice, quiet night. Maybe if I was drunker and if Ryan Seacrest wasn’t hosting it?

I am going to make 2011 a fabulous year of changes!

    A) Yummy pizza rolls! B) Amen to the NYE amatuer hour nonsense. I was in jammies and went to bed 1230. Watching the ball drop makes me sad cause of how sick Dick Clark is. Also I have an irrational fear of terrorists bombing us at that exact second…… clearly I have issues.

But anyway, glad you had fun!

    1. I hate Walmart all the time. I had to go to the one in Rock Hill 3 times while I was down there. The first time they were out of eggs and a bunch of other stuff. Very annoying. How is a grocery store out of eggs?!

    2. We had asian cole slaw, too, but used chicken ramen noodles.

    3. I hate sprouts. They taste like dirt to me.

    4. Carolina Strawberry–that’s the beer company Chris’s bro used to work for and where his sister-in-law gives tours.

    5. Happy New Year!!

aw, Linx. of course he was there 🙂

we don’t have any Walmart near us… but Jason grew up in Missouri, where the Waltons are from, and when we are visiting, Jason’s Mom will say something like “”I’m going to run to Sam’s to pick up some bottled water for you guys” Sam = Sam Walton. Funny stuff. In person sometime, I will tell you ANOTHER story related to… them. 😉

your recipes sound awesome, especially the crab. Nom.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR, Sweetie !!

I wonder if that cole slaw stuff is the same thing my friend’s MIL makes? I had it at her bridal shower and freaked out because it was so amazing. Who knew ramen could change my life?

Ugh I seriously hate wal-mart too. Your experience sounds awful and probably would have raised my blood pressure by 50 points.

Linc looks very dapper in his sweater! Happy 2011 🙂

Ooo I love asian slaw! Yours looks really good too 🙂
I would have to agree with you, I prefer to stay in and party for NYE rather than going out to a crowded bar full of strangers. We went to our friends house and had an awesome time.
Cheers to the spoiled pup too!
    Happy 2011~!~!

I’ve never been huge on going out for NYE either. Crowds and annoying drunk people are just not my thing at all.

I dread wal-mart too. Luckily our target has similar prices so I can easily avoid the weirdos at Wal-Mart.

    Love the blogger babes calendar!

Oh my goodness, Walmart… ugh. When I was in college, there was a Super Walmart nearby that was really nice. Always had great service, lots of lanes open, good produce, etc. I never understood what everyone complained about. Until I graduated and moved. And now… UGH… I totally get it. No fun. But like you – it’s always cheaper. So it’s really hard to go somewhere else knowing that I can save some big $$ by going to WM.

As for the rest of your NYE… girl, I was with my fam in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, snuggling with my niece and nephew… I totally get quiet nights in. Last year I was with a big group of friends at someone’s house just hanging out. Both times in pjs. So I hear ya. 🙂

    • simplyshaka January 3, 2011 at 9:19 pm #

Everything is better in pjs. Thats what I like to believe at least! It seems like all of the Super Wal Marts here are pretty bad. The only decent one is about 40 mins away and I am not driving that far for a deal!

LOVING your apps! you go girl!
i made a lot of stuff but a large number of my guests showed up sans appetite… translation: they took home leftovers.

    • simplyshaka January 3, 2011 at 8:44 pm #

At least you offered them to go! I hate when they don’t even offer to go plates, I dont like that.
